K-mart Job Application for Students

Kmart offers a wide variety of affordable items, including clothing, homewares, toys and electronics. The stores are large and city-centric, often found in shopping centres and malls.

Because of the business it's in and its sheer size, Kmart has always leaned heavily on Australia's student population to fill the casual, temporary and part-time roles that keep its stores running. In fact, it is one of the biggest employers of students in the country.

What casual positions do Kmart offer?

Checkout Operator/Attendant

As a checkout operator/attendant your role at Kmart is to handle both cash and electronic transactions and deliver excellent customer service. In many ways you are the personification of the store, so a warm and welcoming nature is highly prized. This is an entry level role that doesn't require any experience.

Shop assistant

A true all-rounder, workers in this role take care of all the tasks that keep a Kmart store running, like helping and advising customers, restocking shelves, counting products for stocktake and cleaning and tidying. This customer-facing role is perfect for bubbly and friendly personalities, as well as those with an eye for detail. No experience is necessary.

Storeperson

Working in the warehouse, the storeperson is in charge of the receipt and dispatch of goods. This job involves a lot of heavy lifting and counting, so physical fitness and a sharp mind are valuable. Generally an entry-level position, some stores may require a storeperson to hold a forklift licence.

Cleaner

Kmart is known for its bright and shiny stores, and it's the job of the cleaner to keep it that way. The cleaner can be either an after hours role or the responsibility of shop assistants who systematically clean the store throughout the day. Fitness and attention to detail are a must.

How do I get a job at Kmart?

As a busy department store, Kmart is looking for new employees pretty much all year round. Things do ramp up towards Christmas however, which means that stores go on big recruiting drives in the second half of the year. As there is a push for temporary and casual workers at these times, the drives tend to target students in particular.

Kmart generally uses its own careers site to advertise open roles, where it keeps a regularly updated list of vacant positions. You can shop and apply for jobs through this portal.

With 34,000 team members, there will always be new opportunities popping up at Kmart, so keep an eye on their site for updates.

What is the average pay for a Kmart casual worker?

According to PayScale, the average hourly pay at Kmart is $20.29 an hour.

Like most retail businesses, Kmart tends to pay its employees the retail award rate, a government controlled rate which takes into account a number of factors, including a worker's age, their role and their experience. For example in June 2020 a 15-year-old retail level 1 employee would earn $12.04 per hour, while a 21-year-old in the same position would earn $26.76.
