German-Southeast Asian Center of Excellence for Public Policy and Writer or Researcher, ACT (Australian Capital Territory)

Job Description

Asia in Review
Call for Volunteers!
Asia Weekly Contributor (South-, Southeast-, or East Asia)

Overview
As CPG is transforming Asia in Review (AiR), our long-running weekly review of constitutional matters and international affairs, into an innovative media platform, we are pleased to offer various opportunities for volunteering.

We are looking for advanced students and young professionals who are interested in contributing to a media platform at a significant stage of its development. If you are dedicated to writing, researching, communicating, or organizing, AiR may be the right opportunity for you.

Asia Weekly is a well-established news review provided by CPG since 2017. It offers readers comprehensive information on strategic developments and crucial events in Constitutional Law & Politics, Human Rights, International Relations & Geopolitics, and Security & Defense. Our concise and impartial format has earned the trust of a diverse and influential readership, including government and university departments, non-government and international organizations, and journalists and researchers worldwide.

Roles and Responsibilities
The Asia Weekly Contributor role involves two distinct roles, namely writing and researching. The specific role assigned to each contributor, either as a Writer or a Researcher, is determined by our current hiring needs and the applicant's qualifications.

Asia Weekly Writer
You will be dedicated to researching, conceptualizing, and writing concise and comprehensive pieces on crucial developments and events in and pertaining to a country; submitting them to the editorial team for revision; making edits as necessary; and resubmitting for publication within a pre-determined timeline.

We are looking for candidates who are keen to develop a sound understanding of the relevant legal-political conditions and realities on the ground, who have strong English writing skills, and who are willing to commit the time necessary to work towards the format’s continued success. Please note that you will be required to provide full coverage of the country/ies that you have been assigned. Considering this, we recommend that you have at least an equivalent of 15 hours to spare each week. Please note that volunteering at Asia Weekly is non-remunerated.

Asia Weekly Researcher
This task requires you to gather material on developments and events in or relevant to the country you have been assigned. The purpose of this exercise is to improve your research skills. By developing organized and effective research methods, you’ll be able to
• become knowledgeable in the country that you have been assigned,
• learn how to recognize a quality source, and
• learn to keep all gathered information organized.
Please note that you will be required to provide full coverage of the country/ies that you have been assigned. Considering this, we recommend that you have at least an equivalent of 15 hours to spare each week. Please note that volunteering Asia Weekly is non-remunerated.

Why get involved?
As we are expanding, you have great possibilities to involve yourself in a meaningful and interesting way by taking a responsible role that fits your interests and abilities. Beyond that, benefits include:
• mentorship by dedicated supervisors,
• the advancement of your analytical and writing skills,
• a growing and deepening understanding of an intellectual area,
• the experience of being part of an ambitious start-up,
• leads on future professional opportunities, and
• the opportunity to broaden academic and personal connectivity around Asia and further afield.

Volunteers who successfully complete their volunteering period with Asia in Review will receive a certificate that acknowledges their success. In addition to this, we are also able to issue a certificate that is equivalent to an internship certificate upon completion of the volunteering period.

Key skills, knowledge, and competencies
We are looking for applicants with strong English written and verbal communication skills, good attention to detail, and a sound understanding of the relevant legal-political conditions and realities on the ground. Furthermore, this position requires an ability to actively participate in a highly collaborative team environment; therefore, you should be a self-starter and highly organized.

Commitment and probation period
It's important to have a real interest in working with us and be ready to learn how to do assigned tasks well and on your own.

The amount of time you'll need to volunteer each week might be different depending on the country or topic you're working on, but we hope you can dedicate around 15 hours a week. You're welcome to commit more time if you're able to.

To be a volunteer, you must agree to contribute for at least four months. We really encourage those who can stay for six months to apply.

Please note that volunteering at Asia in Review includes a one-month probation period that allows both you and us to have the opportunity to assess whether you are the right fit for the team and whether the role meets your expectations.
