Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from Mtpa to Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio.

About the Role
This exciting role will assist in the short to medium term (up to two years) planning, design and implementation of underground and surface exploration programs to facilitate Inventory through Indicated Resource additions to the Tanami resource base. You will be responsible for oversight of all day to day surface and underground Exploration activities on the mine and will also provide input into annual budgeting exercises. Key functions of the role will include mentoring and supervision of our Exploration Geologists to ensure continuous improvement in the technical skills and knowledge of our Exploration Team.

 

In This Role You Will:

  • Oversee and provide quality control on:
    • The design and implementation of exploration programs that add value by expanding both the resource base and geological knowledge; and,
    • Geological interpretation and modelling conducted by Exploration Geologists from all drilling activities undertaken by the Exploration team
  • Through field-based activities such as mapping, core logging and geochemical sampling, collect accurate and reliable data for inclusion in geological models to be used internally or by the Regional Exploration or Resource Geology teams
  • Train and mentor Exploration Geologists to collect accurate and reliable data that can be used by to construct grade estimation models
  • Complete assay QAQC monitoring on a weekly basis and monthly reporting of laboratory performance for all drilling (if requested)
  • Help maintain operational efficiency through implementation of a schedule of exploration activities and effective liaison with the Project Mine Geologists and Mine Planning Engineers
  • Meet individual and team KPI’s to support work programs and strategy (, productivity, budget and ounce delivery)
  • Provide oversight on all exploration activities and, where necessary, design and implement changes via liaison with Senior Geological staff
  • Continually seek to improve the effectiveness of Exploration processes and systems, including the provision of technical support on geological matters and software use
  • Assist in the identification, tracking, review (rate/rank) and close-out/advance of ‘opportunity targets’ 
  • Undertake reviews of core logging, targets and models generated by the Exploration Geologists and oversee the development of work programs to deliver on departmental Reserve and Resource replacement goals
  • Ensure that quality results are delivered on time to meet departmental Resource and Reserve deliverables
  • Lead peer review and peer assist sessions to ensure that exploration activities are well justified and the team is well aligned
  • Develop and implement data management procedures for the Exploration team to ensure timely and accurate collation of geological data which in turn ensures Resource integrity and quality

 

About You:

  • BSc (Hons) or MSc in Geological / Geosciences
  • Extensive operational experience within different geological terrains, with a preference for both gold exploration and production geology experience
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and ability
  • Ability to think creatively leading to generation of drill targets
  • Familiarity and experience of the Australian mining industry and associated mining regulations
  • Strong analytical skills, with a focus on Continuous Improvement
  • Financial management and budgeting skills
  • A demonstrated ability to work within a team environment
  • The interpersonal skills required to supervise drilling contractors
  • GIS and Modelling Software proficiency (preferably ArcGIS, Leapfrog and Vulcan)
  • Administration and Microsoft Office Skills
  • Proof of current Covid-19 vaccination is required as per the WA and NT government directions.
