The Opportunity:

A fantastic opportunity has become available at Newmont, in the role of Regional Chief Geologist for the Australia Region. Reporting to the Group Executive Exploration, Australia this position is highly varied and dynamic, located at our Welshpool offices in Perth, Australia with travel as required.

The Role:

This Senior Technical role will act as the functional expert for setting critical geological process standards for program identification and development, target definition, data acquisition, geological interpretation and modeling. This will require technical review, guidance and support to programs designed to discover, develop, evaluate and ultimately mine gold deposits across the region whilst driving innovation and improving technical processes and systems to accelerate discovery.   

Essential Duties Include:

  • Manage a core regional pool of Subject Matter Experts in the areas of data acquisition, data management, geological modeling, geophysics, geochemistry, prospectivity assessment and QA/QC.
  • Evaluate and prioritize work requests and partner with exploration teams to identify and allocate internal and external resources to staff teams able to complete projects in a timely fashion. Manage external consultants as necessary.
  • Provide technical support and mentoring as required to exploration teams in identifying, prioritizing, testing and interpreting targets.
  • Ensure standards for data acquisition, logging, core photography, sampling, assaying and geological modeling are followed and that these activities are carried out with sound application of geology fundamentals and proper use of available technologies.
  • Keep informed of Industry innovation and ensure that exploration processes remain competitive and leading edge.
  • Reporting to the Regional Group Executive Exploration the role works closely and interfaces with the Global Chief Geologist, the Director Exploration Business Development, Exploration Directors/Managers, Exploration Geologists on the development of exploration strategies and identification of  investment opportunities within the region;
  • Provide expertise to assist identify and recommend earn-in JVs opportunities and acquisition of external mineral concessions and gold and copper mineral deposits in support of the Company’s regional exploration and global Strategic Development strategy;
  • Represent the Company’s interests by attending Industry and University technical project forums and supporting ongoing formal education of explorers as appropriate.

Training & Experience Checklist:

  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Geosciences or related field (typically MSc. or Ph.D.) and broad and varied global experience including significant supervisory responsibilities
  • Extensive industry experience in exploration.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing technical staff and understanding and communicating management expectations.
  • Strong Knowledge of the exploration process from grassroots exploration to resource definition.
  • Broad and multi-disciplinary experience in a variety of geological environments with particular exposure to gold and base metals.
  • Knowledge of cutting edge new geological concepts, ideas and mineralization models.
  • Strong business acumen and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for presentation to senior and executive leadership, the market and outside industry leaders.

Working Conditions:

  • International and domestic travel is required.
  • Extended periods away from their home base may be required
  • Extensive travel to exploration areas is required where conditions may be primitive and/or harsh at times.
