The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for aBiosecurity Research Officer – Pest Animals to be part of ourBiosecurity Division within the Department of Primary Industriesand Regions.

 The Invasive Species Unit is focused primarily on themanagement of weeds and vertebrate pests declared under theLandscape South Australia Act 2019 and on the management of aquaticpests under the Fisheries Management Act 2007. The Invasive SpeciesUnit works closely with regional landscape boards, the Departmentfor Environment and Water (DEW), and equivalent interstate agenciesto achieve coordinated, strategic responses to new incursions andmanagement of existing priority pest species.

The Biosecurity Research Officer, Pest Animals is responsiblefor providing professional support to groups working on pest animalprograms and initiatives, which ensure the ongoing effectivemanagement of invasive species under the Landscape South AustraliaAct 2019. This position provides technical advice, research,analysis and services associated with projects on vertebrate pestanimal problems affecting primary industries and naturalecosystems.

The role contributes to delivering the agency’s prioritiesincluding stimulate growth and value, sustain the resource, andmanage risk and recovery.

The position delivers clear, well researched and expertanalyses, technical advice, scientific papers, briefings andreports to support current NRM programs. The role is responsiblefor developing and implementing field and laboratory trials of newtools and strategies to control pest animals and undertakeseffective data and records management services, ensuring accuratereporting. The incumbent undertakes strategic liaison across abroad range of stakeholders, including landscape board staff, stateand local government, land managers, community groups and thepublic to provide a range of expert technical, policy and planningadvice to contribute to the address of complex pest animal relatedqueries and issues.

  • Possession of a current driver’s licence and willingness to drive.
  • Out of hours work and inter / intrastate travel may be required.
  • You acknowledge your work, health and safety obligations and our expectations.
  • Appointment as an Authorised Officer responsible for implementing the Landscape South Australia Act 2019.
  • Essential: An appropriate Degree in Science, Natural Resource Management, or equivalent.
  • Desirable: A postgraduate qualification in science or Natural Resource Management.
  • Desirable: Previous experience in research, project management and research data analysis.
  • Remuneration
    $85,665 – $94,801 per annum
