  • As our Intellectual Property (IP) Manager, you will play a crucial role in providing IP advice to support teams and scientists, primarily in the Health and Biosecurity Business Unit, but also advising on other life science areas as needed. Your responsibilities will include managing the IP portfolio and providing guidance on IP exploitation strategies to effectively collaborate with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and industry partners.

    Your duties will include:

  • Collaborate with Research Program Leaders and technical staff to identify, develop, protect, and manage IP assets.
  • Participate in deal teams for business development or commercialisation activities, developing effective IP exploitation strategies.
  • Provide proactive specialist IP advice and support to internal stakeholders.
  • Actively manage relationships with external clients, stakeholders and service providers, including external legal counsel and patent attorneys.
  • Manage IP for the Health and Biosecurity Business Unit, working with external attorneys and internal stakeholders to ensure decisions are made and deadlines are met in the filing and prosecution matter in relation to registrable IP.
  • Assist with IP litigation and dispute resolution.
  • Contribute high level expertise and understanding of a broad range of IP issues and complex business problems, including patents, copyright, designs and trademarks.
  • Location : CSIRO sites in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne or Brisbane preferred; other locations considered.
    Salary : AU$121,455- AU$142,321 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

    To be considered you will need:

  • Registered Patent Attorney or IP Specialist with experience in the following areas: patent law and practice, confidential information, trade secrets and IP dispute resolution.
  • Degree qualifications in Life Sciences (e.g., biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, biotechnology, synthetic biology or similar).
  • Demonstrated achievement in advisory or managerial roles in relation to capture and exploitation of registered IP.
  • Ability to work independently, providing pragmatic solutions in managing and exploiting intellectual property.
  • A strong history of establishing and working effectively in teams, builds trust and provides support for the development of IP skills in CSIRO, acting as trusted advisers, fostering effective external client relationships, and ensuring alignment between client needs and CSIRO’s interests.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to foster and develop strong relationships in cross functional teams across the organisation and with external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to generate improved solutions to highly complex problems and resolve complaints using creativity, reasoning and experience.
  • Desirable:

  • Demonstrated ability in advising on IP issues relating to genetic technologies such as CRISPR and/or biomarkers.
  • Previous experience in an in-house IP management role will be highly desirable.
