Research Assistant, Quantum Microscopy

RMIT University Melbourne, Melbourne

Job Description

Overview:

  • Full-time, Fixed term for 12 months or Part-time (0.5 FTE), Fixed term for 24 months

  • Salary Level Academic A + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working Arrangements

  • Based at the Melbourne CBD campus, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University

About You

For this research assistant role in Quantum Microscopy, you have a passion for cutting-edge scientific instruments and scientific investigations. Your success in your work is driven by your analytical approach, the ability to collaborate in a team and excellent communication skills.

Specifically, the role involves the following tasks:

  • Design and realise a new quantum diamond microscope system tailored to a specific application. Quantum diamond microscopy makes use of optically addressed spin defects in diamond to enable quantitative magnetic imaging with sub-micron spatial resolution. You will assemble a system based on a custom-built wide-field fluorescence microscope with dual laser excitation paths, and integrating a hexapod stage to facilitate automated diamond-sample interfacing and achieve diffraction limited imaging performance.

  • Perform experiments to test the capabilities and performance (spatial resolution, magnetic sensitivity) of the above system, with the end goal of demonstrating the ability to image current distributions in thin-film photovoltaic devices with diffraction limited resolution.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have:

  • Evidence of research output including publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports in the field.

  • Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively work with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and effectively manage varying workloads and respond to changing priorities as required.

  • Demonstrated high-level written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience in one or more of the following experimental physics sub-fields: optical microscopy, quantum sensing, magnetism, 2D materials, photovoltaics.

  • Strong analytical and programming skills (e.g., in Python, Matlab, Labview), and ability to carry out both theoretical and experimental work.

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children Check.
