About us

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) is an independent statutory authority responsible for the curriculum, assessment, teacher accreditation and regulatory standards in NSW schools, and accreditation of early childhood educators. NESA is responsible for developing policies and initiatives for evaluating and improving quality teaching and student learning across all schools and school sectors. NESA was formally established on 1 January 2017, in response to the need to adopt a more strategic and outward-looking focus, greater clarity of regulatory roles and responsibilities, and streamlined processes and systems.

At NESA we are presently focused on an exciting, transformational program of Curriculum Reform, and these roles (2 vacancies) are a great opportunity to lead a team who support the work of passionate educators.

About the role

The Subject Matter Expert, Senior Secondary Science provides expertise to support syllabus development for the curriculum reform process which includes leadership and advice for the senior secondary Science syllabuses.

On a day-to-day basis you will be responsible for:

  • preparing reports, briefings and data regarding evidence that supports appropriately sequenced and quality senior secondary Science syllabus development.
  • high level advice and expertise aligned to the findings of the Curriculum Review.
  • collaborating with Subject Matter Experts across Science and key learning areas and cross curriculum teams to ensure cohesion, alignment and quality in the development of syllabuses.
  • advice regarding national and international research that informs best practice in
  • senior secondary Science. 42, C4543 Feb 2023
  • developing materials to support syllabus implementation.
  • collaborating with a range of NESA units, particularly with the Curriculum Reform Division, to support senior secondary Science learning in NSW.
  • using technology to effectively to support the syllabus development process.
  • contributing to other duties as required by the Director.
  • Essential Requirements

  • tertiary qualifications in education and/or educational leadership or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • extensive working knowledge and understanding of current and emerging curriculum and assessment legislation, policies, research, trends and issues relating to curriculum reform
  • expertise in two or more of the following senior secondary Science syllabuses: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental
