  • Established in 1871, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is located in Sydney’s The Domain adjacent to the Royal Botanic Garden and near the Central Business District, the Gallery acknowledges the original custodians of this land – the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. The Gallery attracts around million visitors annually and runs Australia’s largest education program with over 90,000 student and teacher visits per year.

    About the Role

    Provide high level engagement and service to deliver tours and experiences of the collection that support the Art Gallery’s strategic plan of connecting with existing and potential audiences more effectively.

    What technical / soft skills you require

  • Tertiary degree, or equivalent industry experience, in art history, fine arts or education, with strong knowledge of art history, contemporary art practice and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Australian art more broadly.
  • A knowledge of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture.
  • Proven experience and success in the delivery of programs to a high volume of international visitors of cultural diversity, with patience, respect, and a flexible approach and manner.
  • Experience in public speaking and facilitating creative discussions.
  • Good organisational skills, including the ability to establish priorities, achieve goals, and effectively work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to deal courteously with visitors.
  • Working with Children Check.

  • Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and accepted in the community as such. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14(d) of the Anti-discrimination Act 1997.
  • The ability to speak a language other than English, as well as deliver programs in nominated language. Bi-lingual skills (in particular Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, Korean or Japanese) are an advantage.
  • Targeted questions

  • This position is responsible for the delivery of creative and effective program experiences for diverse audiences. Provide an example of when you delivered a tour or program for a particular audience with specific needs. What was your process and the outcome (maximum of 300 words).
  • This position consists of responsibilities across both front and back of house and often can be faced with challenging time constraints. Please provide an example of a situation where you were required to prioritise conflicting tasks involving internal and external stakeholder requests. (300 word limit).
  • Part of the assessment process may include additional online capability testing, skills testing or work samples in accordance with the new Government Sector Employment Act 2013, therefore you may be contacted to participate.
