An exciting opportunity exists for enthusiastic, motivated and dedicated Registered Nurses to advance their career into the Intensive Care space in our  Postgraduate Intensive Care Nursing intake for Mid-Year 2023

 

  

Northern Health Intensive Care Unit

 

Northern Health’s state of the art Intensive Care Unit consists of 18 beds. Our Critical Care Registered Nurses pride themselves on providing exceptional collaborative care servicing approximately 1,600 admissions annually. Our ICU provides care to a wide range of culturally diverse patients with complex medical conditions, including multi-organ failure, severe sepsis, renal failure and respiratory failure requiring advanced mechanical ventilation. We are accredited for ICU medical training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine, and we pride ourselves on a culture of integrated learning for nursing staff through consultant involvement in teaching the staff on the floor and during protected education time.

A day in the life of an ICU Postgraduate Nursing Student

 

  • Opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge into practice at the bedside through a structured and supported program.
  • Building technical skills in managing critically ill patients that encompass advanced haemodynamic monitoring, advanced mechanical ventilation strategies, renal replacement therapies and more!
  • Developing non-technical skills in communication, teamwork, and situational awareness collaborating with medical staff, allied health, support staff, fellow nursing colleagues, patients and their families.
  • Clinical exposure to some of the sickest patients in the state.
  • The opportunity to work with Intensive Care Physicians who value and take part in delivering nursing education.
  • Supported by a team of highly skilled and experienced clinical support and education staff.
  • Work within a team who value each other and the patient care that they give every day.

 

About the program:

 

  • Northern Health’s Postgraduate Nursing program in Intensive Care Nursing commencing June 2023.
  • Runs in partnership with University of Melbourne (Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing) 
  • Students are employed by Northern Health on a 12 month contract at 64 hours per fortnight.
  • Students will be supported by experienced Clinical Nurse Educators, Clinical Support Nurses, Critical Care Staff, senior ICU clinicians, and a wide range of Allied Health staff.
  • Opportunities to experience shifts in the Emergency Department and Coronary Care Unit with potential to utilise study days to experience other areas should you desire.

 

To be successful in this role you will have:

 

  • Minimum of two years acute care Registered Nursing experience.
  • (Desirable) Completed Supported Transition to Excellence in Practice (STEP) Critical Care or equivalent program within a Critical Care environment.
  • Commitment to a 12 month supported program inclusive of all academic and clinical requirements.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of reliability and professional conduct.
  • Experience with clinical assessment, clinical reasoning, problem solving, organisation and prioritisation skills.
  • Highly motivated and willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated provision of quality of patient care.
