About the Opportunity

The Forensic Scientist (Chemistry) is accountable to theManager, Chemistry for the provision of an efficient and effectiveservice in forensic chemistry which results in a scientificcontribution to the effective operation of the justice system inSouth Australia.

About the Business

Forensic Science SA (FSSA) provides a comprehensive, coordinatedrange of services to agencies associated with the justice systemincluding the State Coroner, South Australia Police (SAPOL), theOffice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and defenceand civil litigants.

We are part of the Attorney General’s Department and theDirector, FSSA reports to the Executive Director, Finance, People& Performance.

Within FSSA there are five main groups: Pathology, Chemistry,Biology, Toxicology and Administration. The first four groups areresponsible for the scientific investigation of crime and eachgroup has a diverse range of scientific analytical equipment andlaboratory chemicals at their disposal.

The Forensic Administration Group is accountable for providing acomplex and diverse range of administrative services to bothinternal and external customers.

Special Conditions for Employment

Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificateclearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicantswill be provided further information if an interview is requested.Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) underany circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing sowill not be recoverable from the AGD.

A relevant degree in science or equivalent Experience in the useof analytical techniques used in forensic chemistry including,infrared spectrometry, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometryIncumbent must provide a reference sample so that their DNA profilecan be stored on an electronic database and compared to otherprofiles generated to exclude the possibility of contamination
