About the Transition to Gerontology Nursing Program

Incorporating the ADHERe program in partnership with the University of Wollongong, ARRCS has developed and implemented an inaugural Transition to Gerontology Nursing Program for newly graduated Registered nurses, supported by ADHERe, University of Wollongong and the University of Canberra.

Commencing end March 2023, this Transition to Gerontology Nursing program will see you supported and empowered by our clinical staff including Registered Nurses, Clinical Educators and Residential Care Managers as you follow a structured program and provide safe, people focused, quality care in line with the ARRCS values and mission.

This role is focused on person centred care of older people of diverse backgrounds and cultures living in residential care. In partnership with our consumers the Transition Registered nurse will be supported to learn and undertake nursing management of:

  • Complex medical conditions requiring chronic disease management including diabetes, renal, cardiac, pulmonary, neurological diseases including dementia
  • Recognising and responding to acute deterioration
  • Early recognition of palliative stages and end of life of care
  • Wound Care
  • Pain Management
  • Emotional and social well being

By participating in this program, you will not only develop your skills as a Registered Nurse under supported and mentored guidance, but you will also be building confidence in caring for older people whilst working in a caring, positive, and encouraging team.

This program runs for a 12â18 month period (minimum 12 months) and provides you with both urban and remote nursing experience as your placements vary between selected residences across the Northern Territory from Darwin to Katherine, Tennant Creek, Uluru (Mutitjulu), Docker River, and Alice Springs.

This Transition to Gerontology Nursing program will ideally suit a person who is keen to be involved in a hand on and caring approach to care. You will enjoy supporting and working with the older person, wish to work in rural and remote Northern Territory, with First Australians and be a proactive member of the team.

Skills and experience

In addition to the completion of the attached application pack, we would require all applicants to have the following:

  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • Unrestricted AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse.
  • Basic competencies in and knowledge of the complexities and challenges involved in providing nursing care in the context of a multidisciplinary team and aged care environment.
  • A willingness to learn and building upon existing levels of clinical communication using information technology, written and verbal means and sound interpersonal skills with the capacity to interact with others in a personable and professional manner.
  • A willingness to learn and continue to apply research evidence critical thinking and reasoning to advocate for and implement individualised person-centred care (in service context) with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to build capability to supervise, delegate, and negotiate with others to deliver quality nursing care with a willingness to develop leadership and embrace change in the coordination and delivery of care.
  • Passion and drive to pursue own professional development and commitment to completing the ARRCS new Graduate Nursing Program.
  • Ability to effectively prioritise and organise workload and deliver care with integrity and accountability.

In addition, the following mandatory requirements are essential:

  • NDIS Workers Screening
  • Influenza Vaccinations
  • COVID-10 Vaccination + Boosters
  • National Police Check (dated within 3 months)
