Political Reporter

We are seeking a political reporter to join our team in Canberra and work on producing timely and insightful coverage of federal political developments, breaking stories and political features.

We are seeking a political reporter to join our team in Canberra and work on producing timely and insightful coverage of federal political developments, breaking stories and political features. 

In this role you will….

Write news stories, interviews and backgrounders to tight, rolling deadlines 

Write political features and analysis

Generate ideas, break original stories and undertake investigations

Engage with social media to both promote stories and uncover information

Play a role in multimedia coverage including audio and video content 

As a member of the politics team, share responsibility for regular weekend and out-of-hours working

You’ll bring….

Experience working in a digital news environment

The ability to produce high quality stories, news, comments and copy

Exceptional knowledge of and interest in Australian politics, current affairs and parliamentary processes 

Excellent political contacts 

Strong writing, communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues

Good news judgement and the capability to generate fresh ideas and angles 

A highly developed understanding of media law

Demonstrable track record of working in a fast-paced, high pressure environment, with tight deadlines

A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values
