Job Description

An Environmental Officer is to implement our clients’ requirements across a range of industries. You will work to assess and assist the environmental performance of clients by identifying environmental risks and providing scientific and technical support for a wide range of projects. You will contribute to the implementation of environmental management and protection strategies and promote compliance with environmental and planning legislation and policies and help clients understand their environmental obligations.

Responsible For:

  • Practical understanding of relevant state and commonwealth legislation as it pertains to environmental permits and licensing.
  • Assist with technical reports and written advice to a high quality on a range ecology and environmental issues.
  • Coordinate projects relating to ecological and environmental areas as directed by senior Redleaf staff.
  • Contribute to fieldwork in flora and fauna surveys, habitat assessments and remote fieldwork.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace, and abide by workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Follow all lawful instructions given by the company.
  • Undertake office administration including reception, mail, couriers, greeting clients and filing.
  • Communicate any issues that impede your performance to your Team Leader as soon as they become known by utilising the organisations communication process [fix-it process].
  • Assist in Quality Control issues and report to Team Leader.
  • Understand or seek clarification, and follow all business policy, procedures and processes.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement to the business and its policies, procedures and processes.
  • Assist in marketing the business by asking for referrals for new business and by upselling other products and services to existing customers.
  • Assist the business to comply with all local, state and federal government legal or compliance issues.
  • Follow the organisations business system, including but not limited to, the Work Health Safety & Environmental policies and procedures.
  • Always fit for work and notifying your Manager as soon as you become aware you are un-fit for duties.
  • Travel is a necessary part of this role as we are a ‘land and bush’ based business where activities are usually undertaken in a bush [where fauna, flora and most environmental and heritage values occur] setting at our client’s sites. This will often be in remote locations where you will need to stay overnight in whatever accommodation is applicable for that site. All staff must have the flexibility and ability to participate in field work of this type and we consider this participation as an industry standard.
  • Fauna Management

    Your responsibilities from time to time will include fauna management. As a fauna spotter catcher, you must assist Redleaf Environmental to comply with the specific fauna management requirements of the project environmental permits and approvals.

  • Responsible for ensuring effective management of wildlife prior to and during vegetation clearing activities.
  • Capture and handling of wildlife in a safe manner to people and fauna.
  • Management of endangered, vulnerable and near threatened fauna species with a particular focus on endangered, vulnerable and near threatened species including the Koala.
  • Fauna rescue, relocation and translocation of fauna from works sites.
  • Transport fauna from site to wildlife carers or veterinarian.
  • Euthanising injured animals if they cannot be taken safely to a veterinarian or wildlife carer.
  • Identification of animals to species.
  • Present fauna awareness training at toolbox presentations.
  • Installation of nest boxes and habitat replacement or enhancement.
  • Wildlife monitoring (pre and post clearance).
  • Nest, egg and roost relocation.
  • Responsible for the capture and relocation of fish and turtles from aquatic environments.
  • Entering aquatic environments to manage fauna.
  • Transportation of aquatic fauna to translocation sites.
  • Data entry.
  • Recording site details along with fauna captures, deaths or injuries.
  • Report writing.
  • Site photos for use in identification and reporting.
  • Accountable For:

  • Personal growth in understanding of local, state and federal legislation relating to permits and licencing.
  • Keep up-to-date with industry changes, techniques and information in association with this job description.
  • Billable/non-billable hours per week are maintained to 85% or better on average.
  • Each report is written to a high standard and submitted on time according to project deliverables.
  • Assist the Team Leader in the coordination of every project you were assigned to be within budget and meet project deliverables.
  • Undertake fieldwork when and as required.
  • Submit flora and fauna records, safety information and other records to our internal platforms (i.e., spreadsheets, platforms) to ensure the business complies with all local, state and federal government legal or compliance issues.
  • Complete daily office administration tasks.
  • Communicate any issues that impede your performance to your Team Leader as soon as they become known.
  • Attend and actively participate in all formal and informal in-house training sessions as required.
  • Attend and actively participate in meetings as required.
  • Follow all lawful instructions given by the company.
  • Assist spot quality control issues and report to Team Leader.
  • Understand and follow all business policy, procedures and processes.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement to the business and its policy, procedures and processes and follow the existing policy and procedures.
  • Submit Fix-it Register items to your Team Leader for all matters on continuous improvement or grievances whether internal or complaints received from Clients.
  • Assist in marketing the business by asking for referrals for new business and by upselling other products and services to existing customers.
  • Maintain a professional approach to all customers and staff dealings.
  • Maintain a confidential and professional work environment.
  • Do not undertake any activities that would bring the business into disrepute.
  • Health and Safety:

  • Always fit for work during attendance at a job site or office. Immediately notify your Manager if you are un-fit for work.
  • The use of drugs, smoking and alcohol is expressly forbidden in the workplace. Prescription drugs will be treated on a merit by merit basis and approval is required from the Director of the Organisation.
  • Undertake all actions under the Work Health Safety & Environmental Acts to ensure the safety of all workers and customers.
  • Ensuring you always operate in a safe manner on site.
  • Communicating with machinery operators and site supervisors to create positive coms all times.
  • Attend daily toolbox meetings.
  • Review JSA daily.
  • Complete a Take-5 before entering site.
  • Follow SWMS methods.
  • Participate in safety talks and meetings.
  • Comply with directions on site for safe movement and operating near heavy machinery.
  • Follow call-in procedure.
  • Vehicle and Equipment:

  • Vehicle operated in a safe manner.
  • Complete vehicle inspection and checklist.
  • Weed and seed washdowns as required.
  • Fauna spotter catcher vehicle kit maintained and updated with replacement gear (i.e., flagging tap, animal cages, snake catching kits).
  • Travelling on gravel / dirt roads in remote or rural areas.
  • Qualificiations And Experience:

  • University degree in environmental science, applied science or equivalent in one of the following disciplines: environmental management, chemical, forensic, physical, geological, hydrological, environmental, applied or biological sciences, environmental engineering.
  • 3-5 years or more experience in ecological or environmental projects in paid or voluntary capacity.
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Moderate understanding of GIS software including QGIS and ArcGIS.
  • Excellentverbalandwrittencommunication.
  • Organised and able to meet deadlines.
  • High level of understanding in ecological survey methods.
  • First aid certificate.
  • Fauna handling and venomous snake handling.
  • Class C Drivers License.
  • Physically fit and resilient in the workplace.
