About the opportunity

The School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Sydney is home to the key social science disciplines, with outstanding staff and students undertaking world-leading teaching and research. The School comprises the disciplines of Anthropology, Government and International Relations, Political Economy and Sociology and Criminology.

The Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies is seeking a Research Fellow (Sociology), Level B to join a team on a wide-ranging program of research centred on the social, political and economic dimensions of health, wellbeing and care under Professor and Director Alex Broom and Deputy Director Dr Katie Kenny.

The particular focus of this Centre is the nexus of health and social, economic, ecological, and political problems. This means thinking critically across scales (from the microbial to the planetary) and subjects (humans and non-humans), to make sense of why key global challenges are emerging with greater and greater frequency, with an emphasis on combining theoretically informed analyses with concrete translational implications to better address some of the key health challenges that we face as individuals, society and a global community.

In this role, you will be undertaking the following activities:

  • writing, leading and co-publishing academic papers with Professor Alex Broom, Dr Katie Kenny, and with members of the SCHS team
  • undertaking project development and qualitative fieldwork as required
  • leading qualitative data analysis including on existing data sets
  • submission of co-authored journal articles, across a mix of sociological and applied outlets
  • undertaking, supported by research assistants, ethics submissions and research governance processes
  • contributing to the preparation and submission of applications for competitive research grants and/or fellowships from external funding bodies
  • providing day-to-day support to Professor Broom and the broader SCHS team, including in relation to his various research projects and mentoring junior staff
  • working with Centre Directors, Theme leaders and Centre research staff, to further the vison and objectives of the SCHS.

About you

  • a PhD in sociology or a related discipline
  • a research profile evidenced by high-quality, peer reviewed research in sociology, anthropology, public health, qualitative research, science and technology studies or related discipline
  • experience designing, running and disseminating social research projects including collecting, analysing and publishing qualitative data
  • sound project management experience
  • a demonstrated capacity for engagement with social theory
  • the ability to contribute to the preparation and submission of research grants
  • demonstrated initiative, teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills in an academic context.
