Research Assistant

UNSW Australia Sydney, Sydney

Job Description

Research Assistant

Job no: 515209
Work type: casual
Location: Sydney, NSW
Categories: Research Administration support

The has been established within the at UNSW to:

  • increase knowledge about the contribution of Australia’s total emissions (including from its exported coal and gas) to specific, climate-related harms threatening identifiable human communities in Australia;
  • harness that knowledge to raise awareness about the need for, and to develop, a national pathway for a just, human rights-based, and Paris-aligned phase-out of Australia’s coal and gas export sectors; and
  • provide a human rights-based model framework for other fossil fuel exporting advanced economies.
  • The RA will work closely with the Hub’s Coordinator during State 1 (Research) of the project: ‘Building Knowledge’. The Hub will begin by liaising with (CA) on new climate research to quantify climate-related effects in Australia – including additional warming – from the emissions of our exported coal and gas, in the present and under future scenarios. The Hub will apply the new data in identifying the Australian human systems, people and communities most exposed to worsening harms from escalating climate effects and will draw this analysis into a human rights framework. Working both internally and in tandem with Climate Analytics, the Hub will also address further, as yet uncertain, questions arising. A First Draft Report will be prepared to conclude this research phase, integrating the scientific and human-related information gathered and, ultimately, presenting a draft national phase-out plan for Australia, based on the just transition, human rights principles and the Paris Agreement temperature goals.

    Application Form

  • We are seeking a casual Research Assistant (RA) to assist with specific aspects of our work.
  • The RA will be with the Hub through Stage 1 (Building Knowledge) and the first part of Stage 2 (Building the Base), with the possibility of continuing beyond that. This is essentially from mid-March to mid-September 2023. The RA’s role is to help the Hub’s Coordinator to:

  • develop and manage the empirical research project with Climate Analytics (CA).
  • apply the data from CA’s research and from other sources (from various disciplines) to human rights-related effects in Australia.
  • Integrate the research findings into a draft report.
  • Assist with the preparation of a draft human rights-based national phase-out plan for Australia.
  • The RA needs to be unafraid of cross-disciplinary work, have a background in human rights law or practice, be competent in legal research and have very good writing skills. A degree of knowledge of the climate space would be beneficial but is not essential. The Hub is flexible as to the number of days allocated for this project, which may be extended as required.
