About the role

Mater Research (MR) has a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Research Assistant to work with our Genome Plasticity and Disease Group led by Prof Geoff Faulkner, based at the Translational Research Institute campus at Woolloongabba. This will be a 0.6 FTE (22:30 hours per week) position, and will primarily carry out molecular biology, genetics and genomics experiments to support ongoing research projects.

Salary range: $79,454 – $85,619 FTE p.a. (MRI Admin 6) plus superannuation and salary packaging

What you’ll be doing

Specifically, the Senior Research Assistant will:

  • Participate in the execution and control of research studies
  • Coordinate the processing, organisation and analysis of data
  • Develop and optimise new research methodologies
  • Maintain records and writing reports
  • Share in responsibility for general lab management, ordering, compliance and safe work practice
  • Attend, as appropriate, research related and organisational events
  • About you

    To be successful in your application, you will have:

  • Completion of a relevant undergraduate degree with documented research training/ experience, e.g. BSc (Hons).
  • Ability to operate independently exercising initiative and judgement as appropriate
  • Possess analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience of a broad range of molecular biology techniques, in particular: Molecular cloningDNA and RNA extractionTraditional and quantitative PCRGel electrophoresisPrimer designAnalysis/interpretation of Sanger sequencing data.
  • Experience of mammalian cell culture, including: Transfection of cultured cellsFlow cytometry analysisFluorescence microscopy
  • It would be desirable to also have experience with: Design and implementation of functional genomics (CRISPR) assaysLibrary preparation for Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencingSterile handling and preparation of clinical samples, including blood and tissueLab management, including ordering and OH&S compliance.
