About Institute for Positive Psychology & Education:

The Institute for Positive Psychology and Education (IPPE) is led by its Director Professor Rhonda Craven. IPPE conducts multi-disciplinary research to address educational and psychosocial issues, translate theory and research into effective policy and practice, and demonstrate how individuals, communities and organisations cannot just succeed but flourish and thrive. The Institute conducts research in three program areas: Indigenous Thriving; Positive Psychology; and Human Motivation and Behaviour. IPPE is internationally recognised for theoretical, measurement and applied research; a strong track record of external grants and awards; publications in high quality journals; collaborative links with leading international researchers; established relations with community organisations, including high-profile Australian industry partners as well as international partners; and a PhD program encompassing Education, Educational Psychology, Indigenous Education, Positive Psychology, and Sport and Health Psychology, research.

About the role:

We are looking for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander members of the community who are tech savvy and enjoy talking to people on the phone. If you have experience supporting Community on the phone, access to a phone you could use, and you are available to call Community members at a time that suits them, we would be excited to hear from you.
The Wonnarua Nation Aboriginal Corporation (WNAC) is working in partnership with the Institute for Positive Psychology and Education (IPPE) at Australian Catholic University (ACU) on a range of programs to help ‘Close the Gap’. These programs are a once in a generation opportunity to make a tangible difference, to help children thrive at school, enhance their wellbeing, and to build a positive future for children and community.
WNAC and IPPE are looking to employ numerous Indigenous Research Champions, to work with us on supporting family’s kindergarten students who will be involved in a home reading project.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend 1-day training in April 2023
  • Conduct survey questions and collect school reports with children and their parents on three occasions using platforms such as Zoom, at approximately May, August and December 2023. An estimated 30 hours on each occasion
  • Fortnightly phone call to support families and to check in regarding the program.
  • Assist with conducting interview and focus group yarning sessions at the conclusion of the study Dec 2023.
  • Ensure confidentiality and manage all data collected with discretion and provide back to ACU research team within three business days of collection.
  • Ongoing liaison under the direction of the ACU research team.
  • Must be available April – December 2023.

You will need to have:

  • This is an identified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander position. Applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Descent.
  • Current Working with Children Check.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.
  • Interest in research projects and understanding of intervention programs to support children’s learning and future trajectories

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills.
  • Access to a mobile device and willingness to use to make phone calls.
  • Excellent phone/Zoom call mannerism and able to lead project sensitive discussions.
  • Able to attend training (April) and facilitate one face-to-face yarning session in Dec 2023.
