  • About This Opportunity   

    This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a dynamic team investigating antibody responses that may exacerbate bacterial infection. The Research Fellow will be responsible for driving research into how the glycoylation of antibody can positively or negatively effect immune responses to bacterial infection. The successful applicant will take a leadership role in this research project as well as play a central role in the administration and organisation of the project within the T-Wells research group at the Frazer Institute. The project encompasses design, organisation and interpretation of experiments together with data analysis.

    The project will benefit from skills in both molecular microbiology and immunology including antibody purification and analysis, bacterial pathogen handling, flow cytometry, cell culture, ELISA and animal studies. As a research focused academic at level A you will be supported and guided by more senior academic research staff with the expectation of an increasing degree of autonomy over time. At this level it is expected that the incumbent will contribute to service and engagement roles and activities.

    Key responsibilities will include:

    Research

  • Produces quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.

  • Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.

  • Work with colleagues in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.

  • Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.

  • Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile.

  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

  • Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

  • Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

  • As appropriate, manage research support staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.

  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

    About the Frazer Institute

    The Frazer Institute is a modern research facility where clinical and basic science converge in the translational research of cancer, immunology and genomic medicine. The Institute is host to over 300 researchers, students and support staff. It lays claim to global, world-changing discoveries such as the world’s first cervical cancer vaccine.

    Based at the Translational Research Institute beside the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the Frazer Institute has strong clinical interactions and world-class facilities that enable researchers to be at the forefront of their fields. Our position within the TRI allows for a much greater collaborative research environment, allowing our researchers to focus their efforts on turning their scientific discoveries into better treatments for diseases including a variety of cancers, osteoporosis, arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. 

    About You  

  • Minimum PhD qualification majoring in immunology or microbiology, or an equivalent combination of experience and education/training.

  • Basic understanding of immunology, molecular microbiology, or biochemistry.

  • The ability to plan, execute and interpret research in a semi-independent/independent manner.

  • Experience with microbiology, flow cytometry, PCR, ELISA assays, immunology studies, tissue culture, bacterial culture and aseptic technique, laboratory animal handling and procedures.

  • Ability to quickly acquire new laboratory techniques and to perform them routinely at a high level of accuracy and efficiency.

  • Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.

  • Availability to check on laboratory animals on occasions out of business hours.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team and high level of inter-personal and communication skills.

  • Sound knowledge of OH&S guidelines and laboratory safety.

  • What We Can Offer   

    This is a full-time (100%) fixed-term position through to 31st December 2023 at Academic Level A. With possibility of an extension.

    The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $74,308 – $99,426 plus super of up to 17% The total FTE package will be in the range $86,941 – $116,129 per annum.
