Job Description

The Commonwealth Games – an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the 72 member nations of the Commonwealth – is coming to Victoria in 2026.

Millions worldwide will watch the thriving regional centres of Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Gippsland and Shepparton host a jam-packed schedule of 20 sports, nine para sports, the Games ceremonies and festival program that together will showcase the best of Regional Victoria.

The Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (Victoria 2026) will deliver the Games. Together with the State of Victoria, the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Games Australia, it is tasked with organising a world-class event for athletes, spectators, locals and the Commonwealth of Nations.

About the Role

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel, IP/IT and Data Privacy will be the primary contact in relation to advice and issues pertaining to data privacy, brand protection and IT legal requirements.

Some of the role responsibilities include: 

  • Oversee the OC’s privacy function and processes as the organisation’s Privacy Officer, ensuring the OC meets its privacy obligations and that best practice privacy processes, systems, awareness and culture are embedded throughout the organisation.
  • Serve as a key subject matter expert and advisor to the OC’s Legal and Brand Protection team and their business units on key legal issues in commercial negotiations.
  • Engagement with a range of other government bodies to design, drive and effect legislation (including under the Major Events Act 2009) to protect the OC’s interests.

Responsibilities of this role will evolve during the lifespan of the Organising Committee and it is likely that the role profile will evolve with the changing needs of The Games.

 To be successful in this role, you will be:

  • An experienced data privacy legal practitioner
  • A subject matter expert on matters of branding, intellectual property rights protection and IT contracts
  • Well organised, have a high level of attention to detail, strong stakeholder management skills and have a service mindset promoting the reporting of accurate and high-quality information in a timely manner
  • Comfortable working in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment
  • Able to display the highest levels of integrity and commitment with an ability to deliver excellent results
  • Prepared to take accountability and ownership of tasks and problems
  • A pragmatic thinker and demonstrated collaborator, who displays sound legal and business judgment in providing practical advice to clients on privacy, IT and IP issues
