The ARC Training Centre for Healing Country (‘Healing Country’) builds a robust science-business interface that links Indigenous Australians to vibrant and resilient businesses in revegetation of damaged lands that reconnects communities to healthy landscapes to create ongoing financial independence through the carbon economy, honey production, seed supply, cultural species development and restoration services. The Centre’s layered training framework will ensure future Indigenous practitioners and emerging leaders can continue to deliver cost-effective restoration business solutions at the scale and diversity required to service future demand.

    Your new role

You will be responsible for a program of research that addresses the restoration needs of Indigenous research-users and encompasses a diverse range of field, laboratory and glasshouse-based experimental research and development of restoration technologies to deliver biodiverse, cost-efficient restoration.
    This includes:

  • Smart seeding technology.
  • Reinforcing the native seed supply chain.
  • Producing virtual and practical guidelines suitable for interpretation by Indigenous restoration practitioners, protocols, and tools to support sustainable development of Indigenous-owned or managed native seed businesses.
  • Improve seed use in restoration by Indigenous restoration practitioners.
  • Determining links between plant species diversity and soil organic carbon storage and tools needed for cost-efficient assessment of soil carbon to match ERF targets for measuring, modelling, and monitoring soil carbon sequestration.
  • Refining and scaling techniques for landscape management to improve soil health and increase seed use efficiency in restoration.
  • Based on this enhanced understanding, solutions for restoration will then be developed through assessing a broad range of business-ready options through active links to the Socio-economics node, partner organisations and other restoration organisations.

You will have a well demonstrated research and publication profile in restoration ecology relating to seed supply chain issues and relevant experimental science skills and research leadership.

Your role will involve making a substantial contribution to the research profile of ARC Healing Country, the School and Curtin University by collaborating and partnering with Indigenous research users and liaise with industry partners and be involved in post-graduate student supervision.

The position is based in Perth and will involve liaising with staff and research providers and Indigenous partners in the Healing Country network and at both national and international levels.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate a high-level of Indigenous cultural competency and the ability to communicate effectively with Indigenous research-users.

A doctoral qualification and experience in native seed science focused on developing solutions to impediments to improve the native seed supply chain from collection to site use is essential for this position.

Previous experience in seed science and technology, knowledge of restoration principles and proven ability to formulate seed policy documents and previous experience in the management/analysis of restoration related research programs is highly desirable. The ability to build and sustain diverse research teams is essential to the success of this position.

Although not essential, this role would be well-suited to an Indigenous Australian who has previous experience working with indigenous communities and industry professionals.

You will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role.
