About the opportunity

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Project Analytics to work as part of the team in the John Grill Institute for Project Leadership, in the Faculty of Engineering and with strong links with the Data Science Institute. Due to the nature of the project, we are looking for candidates to satisfy either of the following roles:

• A computer scientist/data scientist with experience in natural language processing. The focus of this role will be to analyse thousands of documents on major infrastructure projects, and seek to identify patterns of relevant information that can inform the multi-disciplinary engineering design of infrastructure assets on a related project. The successful applicant will combine specialist expertise in natural language processing with an ability to engage across the full stack. The project is an opportunity to engage with engineers and other experts on a regular basis to progress cutting-edge research that is both suitable for publication into leading academic journals and has impact on the development of data-driven design under uncertainty in complex engineered systems.

• A data scientist or engineer with experience in digital twins to conduct research on digital engineering Building Information Modelling (BIM) data and processes. This role will develop new systems analyses to enable digitally-enabled ‘configuration management’ as changes are made in an evolving digital twin, e.g. during late stage design and fabrication/on-site assembly.

In this role, you will develop work as discussed with the Director of the Institute and have the ambition to develop your own research trajectory that supports the aims of the Institute within the broader national context. As the Research Associate you are expected to work collaboratively on associated research projects with industry partners; and to contribute to the data science, systems engineering and/or civil engineering research communities.

About you

• a PhD in a relevant field such as computer science, maths or engineering, or a related discipline with a strong track record (relative to opportunities) in research on natural language processing, including a body of work published in peer reviewed journals. Applicants who have submitted their PhD for examination or will do so in the immediate future can be considered
• the ability to work with engineers working in industry in written and verbal forms and to sustain relationships with them and engage them in research
• capabilities in working both independently and as part of a team of researchers, to identify opportunities, and to contribute and lead to the development of papers for publication
• outstanding interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and the ability to conduct high quality research with increasing independence and to present that work in an engaging way
• previous experience within a research environment and publication in relevant and refereed journals, and in a broad range of techniques including approaches to qualitative data analysis
• a high level of computer literacy with a good knowledge of relevant computer programs, and ability to connect these through scripting and programming

Desirable criteria – you may have (or be willing to learn):

• ability to write research proposals, and to lead research papers
• knowledge of research on project studies and how to develop papers using data science for project management audiences
• knowledge of the latest debates in the relevant data science community.

For the role focused on BIM data you will also have:

• experience related to computer science or construction engineering with particular knowledge and interests related to the use of Building Information Modelling
• knowledge of IFCs, model checking and systems engineering approaches (such as the design structure matrix)
