Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Condensed Matter Physics/theoretical Chemistry

The University of Queensland Saint Lucia, Queensland

Job Description

  • Academic Level A

  • Fixed-term position for up to 2 years

  • Closing 27 March 2023 at 11.00pm AEST (R-22338)

  • About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work at the borders of condensed matter physics, statistical mechanics, and theoretical chemistry. You will play a key role in a research program investigating the collective behaviours of spin crossover materials. Spin crossover molecules have two internal states that can be switched between via light, current, temperature, or pressure. In crystalline phases elastic interactions lead to complicated collective phenomena, that have a strong analogy to magnetism.

In this position you will develop microscopic theories of collective and light-driven behaviours of crystalline spin crossover materials. This will combine quantum mechanical and classical modelling. You will work closely with experimental colleagues, using the theories you develop to explain experiments and predict future experiments.

At this level it is expected that the incumbent will contribute to service and engagement roles and activities.

     Key responsibilities include:

    1. Research

  • Produce high quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.

  • Work with colleagues in the development of joint research projects.

  • Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.

  • Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile.

  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

  • 2. Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

  • Demonstrate personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

  • An emerging profile in research in theoretical physics, theoretical chemistry, or a closely related area.

  • Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals.

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of condensed matter physics and/or inorganic chemistry.

  • The ability to collaborate closely with experimentalists.
