Your New Role

The University of Tasmania is seeking to appoint an Aboriginal Heritage Research Fellow as part of the UNESCO Chair Program in Communication, Environment and Heritage in the College of Arts, Law and Education.

As the Aboriginal Heritage Research Fellow, you will work closely with researchers, Aboriginal communities and organisations, and relevant government agencies to co-design, coordinate and conduct research in Aboriginal heritage management and protection in Tasmania. Working with Aboriginal and land management organisations, you will support the co-design and delivery of projects and create new collaborative opportunities that recognise and protect diverse Aboriginal values and interests. You will design and deliver training to increase researchers’ capability to conduct research into Aboriginal cultural heritage and support relevant strategic research initiatives related to Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage.

Working with internal and external partners, you will support the provision of training opportunities for Aboriginal students and HDR candidates in the areas of cultural heritage protection, management and interpretation. You will also work with an advisory committee to set and monitor broader and longer-term goals related to Aboriginal cultural heritage research and training.

Where relevant, you will undertake undergraduate and postgraduate coursework teaching and support the University’s commitment to Indigenising the curriculum. You will participate in a two-year, individually tailored academic development program in support of either completion of your higher degree by research or developing your academic profile.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

As the Aboriginal Heritage Research Fellow, you will have a strong understanding of contemporary Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander issues and the impacts of these on Indigenous societies and cultures, including Tasmanian Aboriginal communities. You will also have the ability to apply this understanding in research and training contexts. With high level communication skills, you will have a record of building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally within the discipline, profession, industry, and wider community.

Having completed a PhD in a relevant field, or being willing to enrol in a PhD, or progress towards completion of, you will bring a commitment to innovative research that will make meaningful contributions to Aboriginal heritage research.
