The Opportunity

Reporting to the Senior Scientist you will contribute to the development of media for the culture of mammalian cells that will target the optimisation of expression and quality of recombinant proteins. Important to this role, you will plan and complete mass spectrometry-based studies and provide the technical and scientific expertise required to contribute to the development of important analytical methods that are scalable to support our Product Development activities. In addition to the above, you will design and implement strategies for analysing raw materials and process fingerprinting at both small- and large-scale. You will also help process samples from both internal and external collaborators. You will be asked to need to utilise your knowledge in biochemistry and mass spectrometry in combination with a variety of separation methods to further ensure success in this role.

The Role

  • Design and implement experiments in collaboration with the Supervisor.
  • Perform general mass spectrometry tasks following requirements supporting general and functional analysis of media samples
  • Present results from both independent and collaborative laboratory work both internally and externally to facilitate the progression of CSL R&D projects including the communication of complex or technical information to others
  • Contribute to the planning, performance, evaluation and reporting of scientific experiments at the highest levels of scientific integrity
  • Work together with and provide expertise to other team members to achieve specified research project goals within defined timelines
  • Maintain current awareness of important scientific/technical strategies and innovative technological developments in mass spectrometry, specifically in biologics and complex biotherapeutics implementation
  • Interact with vendors/suppliers to obtain goods and services, regular interaction with colleagues in the field (e.g. at conferences or through collaborations)
  • Oversee experimental work in areas of direct responsibility as assigned

Your skills and experience

  • Postgraduate degree (preferably PhD, MSc or equivalent degree) and/or experience in a relevant discipline
  • 5+ years relevant industry experience with BS, 4+ years relevant industry experience with MS or 2+ years relevant industry experience with PhD in the field of mass spectrometry-based protein, amino acid or metabolite analyses
  • Experience in project work with excellent analytical skills
  • Expertise in operating and maintaining mass spectrometry instrumentation, as applied to protein, peptide or amino acid analyses (e.g. ESI-MS/MS, MALDI-MS/MS, knowledge of qTOF’s, QqQ and Orbitrap instruments). Prior experience in small molecule mass spectrometry would be advantageous
  • Proficient in mass spectrometry data analysis tools
  • Experience with cell culture and sterile techniques would be advantageous
