    Great opportunity to start with one of the most dynamic emergency service organisations in Australia focusing on assisting flood rescue and provision of other assistance to the community.

    The Communications Officer provides customer service to internal and external stakeholders and the community of NSW in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the NSW SES State Operations Centre (SOC) provides an efficient and effective customer service responding to incoming enquires or request for assistance across NSW SES.

    The role consists of rotating shifts over a 24-hour period of up to 12.5 hours duration, 7 days per week. Ideally applicants will live within 90 minutes travel of Wollongong CBD. 

    We are currently recruiting to fill multiple Temporary and Casual roles. As the agency grows there may be the opportunity for some of these positions to be converted to ongoing. The recruitment will also create a Talent Pool for the Communications Officer role within our State Operations Centre.

    The NSW SES serves the NSW community as the lead agency for floods, storms, and tsunamis as specified by the State Emergency Service Act 1989. We are recognised as the most versatile and widely used emergency service organisation in NSW. Our volunteers are highly skilled, experienced, and well- trained in the wide variety of roles they perform.

    Each NSW SES Unit is as unique and varied as the community it serves, reflecting the vast mix of risks faced and roles required in the diverse locations and communities across the state. In addition to flood, storm and tsunami, our Service provides specialist capabilities that include general land rescue, vertical rescue, road crash rescue, and alpine and remote area search and rescue. The NSW SES responded to over 64,000 requests for assistance from the community over the 2021-22 year. 

    The NSW SES has over 10,000 volunteer members, including reserves, and a
    full-time equivalent workforce of over 370. There are 262 volunteer Units across the State and our volunteer Units are either local, community-based Units, State-wide or regional Units established to provide specialist capabilities. They are varied and unique in their capabilities, designed to address specific risks to communities of NSW.

    About you

    To be successful in this role you will:

  • Be available to complete 4 weeks paid initial training (2 weeks full time, plus 4 x 12-hour shifts within a 8-week period) at the NSW SES SHQ, Wollongong.
  • Have intermediate level of computer skills including the ability to touch type (with accuracy ns speed) and be able to demonstrate competence with Windows based computer applications
  • Have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team in a time critical environment and high stress environment
  • Have the ability to think clearly, logically and remain calm in stressful situations
  • Possess organisational skills including efficient time management, an ability to prioritise tasks and work within defined procedures.
  • What we can offer you  

  • Casual hourly rates:
    Clerk Grade 1 Year 1 – $37.22
    Clerk Grade 1 Year 2 – $38.32
    Clerk Grade 2 Year 1 – $39.38
    Clerk Grade 2 Year 2 – $40.47
