  • About This Opportunity 

    This role is an exciting opportunity for an individual who takes a keen interest in cutting edge systems, advanced computing, design and analysis but also cares deeply about high quality client outcomes and problem solving to achieve a positive and lasting impact for scientific research.

    The successful candidate will be a core part of the UQ Research Computing Centre advanced infrastructure group. The successful candidate will be exposed to cutting edge data storage, and computing and network technologies as well as a myriad of software platforms that enable scientific research at a sector leading scale, being amongst the largest and most technically diverse in the Australian Research and Higher Education Sector.

    Key responsibilities will include:  

  • Provide second-level support to HPC and Research Storage end-users.
  • Perform programming and scripting tasks. This may include but is not limited to database front/back-end development, centre level internal administration systems or web service front ends for client research needs.
  • Working with automation frameworks, such as Puppet, Ansible, Salt and others.
  • Day-to-day administration of hierarchical storage management (HSM) storage platforms and parallel filesystems according to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Participate in, conduct and provide training to clients of RCC storage and advanced computing services as required.
  • Be available during critical incidents or other emergencies to assist with resolution
  • Participate in the resolution of technical problems reported by clients and team members via the service desk or other escalation paths such as the CTO-RCC.
  • Administration of several UNIX/Linux based operating systems (Linux: SuSE, CentOS/RHEL, Ubuntu).
  • About You

  • An undergraduate bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Technology with a major in information systems, software engineering or a related discipline or equivalent
  • A functional understanding of networking technologies and protocols (ethernet, TCP stack).
  • A practical and functional understanding of systems administration principles ranging from basic Linux administration through to more advanced topics such as security hardening, kernel tuning and optimisation of the operating system environmental variables.
  • Practical skills in software engineering and programming languages (python, perl, C, Go, bash etc).
  • Creative thinking capability.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Understanding of and ability to operate and maintain parallel filesystems.
  • A functional understanding of high-performance computing network technologies and protocols (Infiniband, IPoIB, OFED, iSER, RDMA principles).
  • A theoretical understanding of hierarchical storage management, concepts in caching and data hierarchy for large scale storage.
  • Understanding of computational schedulers such as PBS, SLURM, Torque etc.
  • What We Can Offer 

    This is a full-time, fixed-term position for one year at HEW Level 6.  

    The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $84,871 – $91,158  plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range  $99,300 – $106,655 per annum.
