Alstom has a newly created opportunity for an experienced Research & Development (R&D) Manager to join our Engineering team who is looking for the next step in their career to take on a management role, based in Melbourne, VIC. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Day-to-day engagement and coordination of strategic partnerships with R&D partners and key stakeholders
  • Facilitate interaction with Alstom’s global R&D departments
  • Oversee development and progress of R&D packages in accordance with the R&D Plan and delivery program
  • Develop, refine, and monitor plans through regular reviews of progress against milestones, budget and project maturity metrics
  • Oversee testing and proof of concept activities including product development and commercialization
  • Engage with local supply chain to encourage and facilitate participation in R&D activities to develop skills and local supply opportunities
  • Works in partnership with the Workforce Development Manager to develop and coordinate funding and grant applications
  • Prepare reporting for the Industry Development & Stakeholder Engagement Director
  • Works in partnership with the Supply Chain and export Manager to identify and lead localization and innovation opportunities to drive local content, job creation and export opportunities
  • Manage day-to-day innovation development activities in accordance with program and anticipated dates for implementation on the project
  • Develop a culture of continuous improvement, driven by innovation and a commitment to developing rolling stock manufacturing in Victoria
  • Lead the collaboration with Alstom, our strategic university partners, suppliers and subcontractors and the broader industry to drive innovation and achieve our targets
  • Work with the Team to oversee delivery of the Supplier Innovation and Export Readiness Program and associated programs including Innovation Showcases
  • Create and maintain processes that foster a culture of innovation at all levels of the organization and our supply chain and develop processes for tracking, and measuring the effectiveness of innovation initiatives
  • Desired Knowledge / Experience 

  • Tertiary engineering qualification is preferred but not essential
  • Proven experience in project management of technical development programs
  • Expertise in directing technical developmental project teams throughout entire process culminating in successful completion
  • Existing industry relationships with Stakeholder, Government and Partners
  • Team oriented with the ability to work independently
  • Ability to create an environment where individuals actively take initiative and ownership of Delegates, provides encouragement and support to people in accepting responsibility with accountability
  • Excellent leadership and management skills
  • Sound commercial, negotiation and financial skills
  • Results-driven and excellent written and verbal presentation skills
