Research Scientist (aps 6 – El 1) – Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems Data Scientist

Job Description

  • Lead fixed and rotary-winged drone-based scientific sampling for seabirds, seals, whales.
  • Deliver impactful science to ensure sustainable and well managed Southern Ocean fisheries.

  • We are seeking a Research Scientist (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems RPAS) to lead the design, implementation and analysis of drone-based ecological surveys under the Australian Antarctic Science Krill and Krill Ecosystem project at the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). They will be responsible for the management and analysis of drone-derived data streams to assess distribution, habitat use, behaviour, size and body condition of surveyed wildlife including whales, seals and seabirds.

    In this role, you will be part of the AAD Science Branch which leads, conducts and supports a world class program of scientific research and environmental management, consistent with national priorities through the Australian Antarctic Science Strategic Plan. Our research addresses critical issues including climate change, the human footprint in Antarctica, and the conservation of Antarctic and Southern Ocean wildlife. 

    Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading fixed and rotary-winged drone-based scientific sampling in collaboration with the Technology & Innovation Branch and other programs at the AAD.
  • Designing and implementing wildlife surveys by drones for seabirds, seals and whales.
  • Developing and applying analytical approaches to RPAS-derived data streams to assess the distribution, habitat use and behavior of surveyed wildlife.
  • Directing the implementation RPAS flights to undertake photogrammetry and analysing data collected to estimate size and assess body condition of penguins, seals and whales.
  • Writing research papers for peer-reviewed journals and scientific reports for national and international fora.
  • This role may provide Antarctic fieldwork opportunities including extended time at sea participating in research voyages to the Southern Ocean.

    To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline from an Australian University or qualification of equivalent standard from an Australian or overseas university, or other demonstrated relevant experience commensurate with and appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrated statistical skills, including an ability to collate and conduct reproducible analyses of large, complex datasets, including analysis of wildlife survey data.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, including authoring peer-reviewed scientific publications and presenting science outcomes at national and international forums, and/or media engagement and science outreach activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a small team, and to engage widely and develop and sustain beneficial external collaborations and working relationships. 
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in project management.
