The Opportunity
Our Food and Nutrition team here at theTelethon Kids Institute are working on an Australia-first ‘Food Atlas’ projectthat seeks to comprehensively map, measure and monitor food access across WesternAustralia, creating a ‘Food Atlas’ that can be upscaled to a national level. Thisunique level of evidence will be used by State and Local Governments to informfood and nutrition policy and surveillance, support planning decisions andfuture policy direction to create equitable, health-promoting communities thatfoster healthy eating.

To move this project forward,we are seeking a Research Assistant to provide geospatial support to theFood and Nutrition Team to ensure that relevant spatial data are sourced,appropriately managed, and analysed.

The Role

You will be closely workingwith the Team Lead and wider research group to collect, clean and map data,carry out spatial analyses and contribute to reports and presentations of ourresearch outputs.
With your strong understandingin GIS, you will play an important role in providing technical advice andsupport to the team.

Some of your responsibilitieswill include:

  •  Source GIS data and maintain GIS layers and databases.
  •  Carry out spatial analyses (processing raster and vector data, performing geostatistics)
  •  Contribute spatial outputs to research materials.
  •  Advise researchers and students on best practice for GIS data management and analysis.

Based at our modern office in Nedlands, this position will beoffered on a casual basis.

About You
This position would suit someone with a background in GIS ora related spatial discipline and an interest in the area of food &nutrition. Additionally, the key to your success will be your skills &experience in:

  •  Strong understanding of spatial database management and analysis
  •  Experience using ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise Suite (ArcGIS desktop and ArcGIS online) or a similar program
  •  Experience using at least one statistical software program
  •  Strong communication skills
  •  Excellent organisational skills
  •  Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
