Overview

:

The Environmental Scientist helps develop and execute the environmental component of an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program. Key activities involve administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements. The position involves practical application of biology, ecology, chemistry, social sciences, and related disciplines for managing environmental aspects of a project or facility. The position reports to the Project Environmental Lead .

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Integrates environmental requirements into project planning, permitting, design, construction, commissioning and startup, and operations.
  • Assists with development and implementation of environmental permits, plans, and studies.
  • Performs site assessments and surveys to identify site conditions and develop mitigation and sustainability strategies to protect the environment and local communities.
  • Provides technical guidance and support regarding mitigation measures pertaining to natural and cultural resources and communities as documented in the Construction Environmental Control Plan (CECP).
  • Provides technical assistance within HSE teams and to other project groups regarding permitting, risk assessment, plan preparation, studies, and HSE program execution.
  • Assists in the implementation of the project Construction Environmental Control Plan and associated plans and procedures.
  • Identifies and tracks environmental issues, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder concerns.
  • Participates in emergency response, and aids investigation and resolution of HSE incidents.
  • Performs environmental monitoring, sampling, and inspections to confirm compliance with permits and project requirements and commitments.
  • Assists and supportsEnvironmental training for project/facility employees and visitors.
  • Participates in meetings with customers, project/facility team members, and contractors and subcontractors to advise them of environmental requirements that may affect their work.
  • Performs data management, trend analysis, and report preparation and review.
  • Assists other team members in HSE program execution, inclusive of safety and health.
  • Other duties assigned by the Project Environmental Lead or HSE Manager to provide compliance support to the HSE Management Plan and Processes.
  • Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university or college in an applicable technical discipline such as environmental science, ecology, biology, natural resources, or related disciplines.
  • Four or more years of experience related to applicable environmental sciences or regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to research and comprehend organisational and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge or experience in environmental impact assessment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills for preparing presentations, data management, and report preparation.
  • Analytical skills related to sampling, monitoring, and recordkeeping.
  • Adaptable and able to work outdoors in a field environment under various weather conditions.
  • Ability to support multiple work shifts, as needed, and a wide range of tasks.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Additional Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences.
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 14001 Management System standards.
  • Specialized technical skills and knowledge related to an applicable environmental discipline.
  • Broad technical knowledge, science skills, and technical writing abilities.
  • Additional Information 

    This position has responsibilities that include exposure to changing environmental, construction, and operational conditions, which may include: extensive walking in and around an active construction and/or operations site, climbing ladders, working at heights from work platforms including scaffolding, and mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), use of personal fall arrest equipment, walking and working on uneven surfaces, working in constricted and/or confined spaces, variable work shifts (e.g., day, night, weekends, 1st, 2nd, 3rd shift, etc.), and work in inclement weather. Some lifting may be required. Candidate must be able to use standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e. respirator, harness, life vest, hearing protection, etc.).

    The Pluto Train 2 Project is a Major Hazard Facility meaning this is a non-smoking site and no tobacco products – i.e. cigarettes, vapes, lighters, tobacco – are permitted to be brought to the site. Mobile phones and other personal electronic devices – i.e. wireless headphones, iPads, smart watches – are also not permitted on site. 

    This position is available to both local and non-local personnel. For non-locals (FIFO/DIDO), the working roster is 3/1.
