Overview:

  • Full-time, Fixed Term position until October 2024

  • Salary Academic Level B + 17% Superannuation and Flexible Working Arrangements

  • Based at Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) Fishermans Bend, however may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University.

About You
The Research Fellow will undertake research activities in line with the University’s research strategy. It is expected that the Research Fellow will work with an increasing degree of autonomy as skills and experience develop. Under the auspices of DSTG, the Research Fellow will work closely with the Wind-Tunnel Team to develop and enhance existing DSTG Low-Speed Wind Tunnel (LSWT) experimental capabilities to allow better quality flow measurements. The successful applicant will lead the research and study of the formation of wake structures to understand the hydrodynamic implications on maritime platforms. The work includes designing and carrying out LSWT experiments to obtain flow-field and loads data as well as to collaborate with relevant teams at DSTG to carry out flow analysis, numerical-model validations and comparison studies.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have as a minimum:

  • Demonstrated high-level competency and achievement in experimental fluid dynamics, with wind-tunnel experience desirable.

  • Evidence of scientific research publications in the field of experimental fluid dynamics.

  • Knowledge & experience with data acquisition, signal conditioning and fluid-dynamics software.

  • Knowledge & experience in data processing, including uncertainty analysis.

  • Ability to work autonomously and in teams to meet project outcomes, milestones, deadlines and to manage workloads and respond to changing priorities, as required.

  • Excellent presentation, technical reporting and scientific writing skills.

  • Ability to co-supervise postgraduate-by-research students in the field of fluid dynamics.

Qualifications

Mandatory: An honours degree in Maritime, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent in Experimental Fluid Dynamics with wind-tunnel experience desirable. Recent completion of a PhD or equivalent experience.

Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to being an Australian Citizen and obtaining NV1 Security Clearance as well as passing a Working with Children Check and National Police Check.
