Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Graduate Architect for our Melbourne based graduate program starting in February 2024.

The position is within our Life Sciences team who services a wide variety of technology intensive sectors including biotechnology & pharmaceuticals, laboratories & research facilities, healthcare, advanced education and advanced manufacturing.

This position will report directly to the Principal Architect – Life Sciences, Australia.

What will I do?

  • Assist in the design process: Working under the supervision of senior architects to develop preliminary design concepts and drawings. You may be tasked with creating sketches or models of proposed structures in Revit and/ or Enscape.
  • Drafting: Responsible for drafting technical drawings, specifications, schedules and documents under the guidance of a senior architect/ architect. This includes creating construction documents, such as plans, sections, elevations, and details using computer-aided design (CAD) or Revit software.
  • Research: Conduct research on materials, building codes, and regulations. This research can help inform design decisions and ensure compliance with local laws and codes.
  • Coordination: Work closely with engineers, contractors, and other professionals involved in the design and construction process under the guidance of a senior architect/ architect. You will be expected to coordinate with these individuals to ensure that the project is completed successfully.
  • Communication: Under the guidance of a senior architect/ architect, communicate with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure that the project is completed according to their specifications. Good communication skills are essential for this role.
  • Quality assurance: Under the guidance of a senior architect/ architect , be responsible for reviewing your own drawings and documents to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Site visits: Under the guidance of a senior architect/ architect, visit construction sites to oversee construction progress, conduct inspections and ensure that the project is proceeding according to the design specifications.

Skills / Qualifications

What we look for in this role:

  • Completed your Architecture degree by the end of 2023 or earlier.
  • Attention to detail: You will be responsible for creating detailed designs and specifications and must pay close attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and safety of the work.
  • Teamwork: Most projects require collaboration and teamwork, so strong interpersonal and collaboration skills are essential
  • Adaptability: In a constantly evolving field, a graduate engineer you should be able to adapt to new technologies and techniques.
  • Problem solving:  Good critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills are highly valued.
  • Communication skills: The ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner is important for a graduate architect. This includes the ability to write reports, give presentations, and explain complex technical concepts to non-technical colleagues.
  • Continuous Learning: Technologies and methodologies are constantly changing so staying up to date is an important attribute
  • Creativity: have that innate ability to “think outside the box”
  • Analytical ability: ability to think analytically to fully define a problem and develop solutions suited to the problem.

  • Leadership: well-developed “human skills” so you can smoothly perform non-technical duties.
  • Respect for health and safety protocols: this is more of a requirement than a skill but adherence to policies that aim to eliminate or mitigate risk is a necessity.
