About the role

Mental Health Services are seeking undergraduate nursing students, who are currently enrolled in an Undergraduate Nursing Degree and have successfully completed 18 months of the nursing program.

In addition to the selection criteria applicants must be able to meet the following requirements:

  • Have completed and passed the mental health component of the program and demonstrate a satisfactory academic record.
  • Be available for two weeks to undertake Mental Health specific education, training and orientation.
  • Have a minimum of 12 months remaining in their undergraduate nursing programme.
  • Have availability to work a rotating roster with a minimum of 2 – 3 shifts a fortnight (exceptions when undertaking clinical placements).
  • Be available to work across two SLHD Mental Health inpatient facilities which are; the Concord Centre for Mental Health based at the Concord Repatriation General Hospital or the Professor Marie Bashir Centre based at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Camperdown.
  • Assistants in Nursing will be responsible for providing direct mental health nursing care to consumers within the Mental Health Service under the supervision and direction of the Registered Nurse.

  • Is currently enrolled as a Nursing Student (with successful completion of at least two semesters) and previous experience working in an acute care facility.

  • Demonstrates interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholders.

    All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW. Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
