About the opportunity

In a newly created role in our Managed Funds Claims Business, we have an opportunity for a Data Scientist.  The team is looking to apply scientific principles to the claims operation to understand and manage the drivers of performance in a holistic way.

The role will involve translating the operational and performance needs of the managed funds business unit into data-driven predictive models that can be used to monitor and guide performance.

You will work under the direction of analytics partners in the performance team, who will support you in framing problems and developing hypotheses.  You will need to use scientific methods and analytic tools to tackle the problems including sourcing and integrating relevant data, analysing relationships, and developing and testing model structures.

The key responsibilities for this role include the following, but not limited to:

  • Strategy and Planning
    • Develop and refine analytical use cases under the direction of Analytics leads in the performance team.
    • Play an active role on projects of diverse scope, range, priority and urgency within insurance Schemes that support the community
    • Translate between business and analytical problems
    • Interrogate and interpret data and models to formulate, evaluate and iterate hypotheses quickly
  • Technical Performance
    • Source, integrate, explore and examine data from multiple sources; discover, analyse and summarize relationships, trends and insights; derive, validate and interpret models and the results of data experiments; and connect these analytic results to actionable insights to support better performance in managed fund claims
    • Assist in identifying and addressing key business questions, issues and opportunities. Diagnose root causes, by applying analytical and statistical techniques to quantitative data in combination with qualitative knowledge, assumptions and judgments
    • Collect new data and refine existing data sources as required
    • Contribute to the development of new descriptive, exploratory, diagnostic, and predictive analyses
    • Structure and document the data preparation, management, modelling, visualization and presentation tasks supporting each analysis output
    • Work effectively with actuaries, analytics partners and business analysts within the performance team. Share knowledge and contribute reusable practices and techniques within the team.

Your Story So Far

  • Bachelor to Master’s Degree in Quantitative/Scientific field (Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, or related disciplines.)
  • Advanced programming skills in modelling platforms and modern data science tools (specifically R, Python)
  • Knowledge of state of the art statistical and machine learning techniques and their business applications.
  • Experience in producing meaningful insights from large structured and unstructured datasets and knowledge of relational databases such as: SQL, Hive, Pig.
  • Understanding of experimental design techniques and their associated limitations.
  • Deep understanding of the mathematics and statistics that support various model structures
  • Inquisitive, with a passion for business improvement and empirical analysis
