The NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth (Stillbirth CRE) has been established to tackle the problem of stillbirth in Australia. Specifically, the Stillbirth CRE recognises that stillbirth has enormous economic and psychosocial impacts; that there has been virtually no reduction in rates for over 20 years; that large equity gaps exist; and that families whose child is stillbirth often receive suboptimal care

About the role

Mater Research have an exceptional opportunity for an enthusiastic Senior Research Fellow (SRF) to join the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth (Stillbirth CRE) at Mater Research Institute in Brisbane. This is a full-time, 3-year fixed-term contract position, with potential for renewal, based at MRI at our South Brisbane campus.

The Senior Research Fellow will play a leading role in the team’s perinatal health research program, co-ordinating multi-country research studies with our international collaborators. In this role, the SRF’s will have opportunities to engage with international organisations, supervise higher- degree research students, and advance their research track record. They will also identify new opportunities to grow the Institute’s global Mothers’, Babies and Women’s Health research program.

The position is funded for a period of 3 years, during which time the incumbent will be responsible for research project oversight, implementation and management, including day-to-day management of staff, execution of projects inclusive of budget & contracts management, stakeholder engagement, development of study protocols and operations manuals, ensuring milestones and timelines are met, reporting and problem solving.

Salary: $120,855 p.a. (MRI Research Lvl 3.1) plus superannuation and generous salary packaging

What you’ll be doing

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Provide expertise, and successfully co-ordinate the development and conduct of perinatal health research projects in national and international settings.
  • Establish and manage relationships with partner organisations, international collaborators and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct independent research and work effectively within a team.
  • Taking a lead role in the development, coordination and submission of significant funding applications, and be responsible for financial oversight of grants and funding Publish in high quality national and international research journals, and other appropriate refereed publications
  • Disseminate research findings through conference and seminar presentations.
  • Co-ordinate financial, administrative and logistical resources and execute project budgets responsibly, ensuring that reports and milestones are completed on time.
  • Work with Principal Investigators and Co-investigators to promote collaboration with Mater Education and Mater Health that fosters an environment that encourages the translation of research outcomes into clinical and community practice.
  • Build and maintain a track record of impact, achievement and initiative consistent with the Institute’s priorities.
  • Supervision / co-supervision of junior research staff and higher-degree research students (Honours, Masters and PhD).

About you

You will have excellent statistical skills and a genuine motivation and dedication to work in clinical research. Additionally, you will possess the following:

Essential:

  • A PhD qualification in the health sciences, public health, maternal or perinatal health, or a relevant field
  • Technical, scientific or clinical background in maternal and perinatal health area National recognition in the area of expertise, with an internationally developing profile and an established record of publications in reputed refereed journal and presenting at conferences.
  • A strong record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research
    funding.
  • Demonstrated experience in independently conceptualising, designing, conducting and analysing quantitative and/or qualitative research in an international development setting following high quality standards
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, undertake multiple tasks and work in a flexible, productive and pro-active manner in a busy environment, individually and as an effective team member
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal and consultative skills and the ability to
    work collaboratively with colleagues from a multidisciplinary background
  • People management skills including capacity building, professional development, teamwork, collaboration and communication
  • An understanding of how to effectively co-ordinate and execute international research projects

Desirable:

  • Qualification in Midwifery
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and supervision of Honors and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion
