The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.
  

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia’s frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia’s customs service. The Australian Border Force’s mission is to protect Australia’s border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.

Immigration Integrity and Assurance Branch

Immigration Integrity and Assurance Branch (IIAB) is responsible for contributing to the active management of the strategic risk for Migration & Citizenship including monitoring and reporting on the performance of controls. The Branch also manages risk systems that support visa and citizenship programs. The Branch is also responsible for the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority.

Office of the Migration Agent Registration Authority (OMARA)

The OMARA is the regulatory body for Registered Migration Agents (RMAs) in Australia. The OMARA protects consumers by only registering those people who meet specified qualification and character standards, and investigates and takes disciplinary action against RMAs who are found to have breached the Code of Conduct for RMAs.

Successful applicants will be used to fill positions across the Division and create an order of merit.

About the role:

Investigator

The position of Investigator, Professional Standards and Investigations reports to the Assistant Director of the Section within the OMARA.

This role is responsible for triaging, assessing and investigating misconduct complaints against RMAs and taking disciplinary action where appropriate. 

Working with the Assistant Director and the entire team, this role will contribute to enhancing investigative capabilities and governance frameworks that target and disrupt RMA’s engaging in inappropriate behaviour contrary to the RMA Code of Conduct.

Specific duties/responsibilities:

The successful applicants will:

  • Triage, assess and investigate complaints made in relation to the provision of immigration assistance by RMAs and where appropriate, taking disciplinary action against RMAs and former RMAs
  • Conduct interviews, take statements, and facilitate other investigative techniques
  • Facilitate effective working relationships within a multidisciplinary team environment, comprising investigators and other specialists
  • Prepare high quality and well-reasoned decision records
  • Represent the interests of OMARA and helping manage OMARA’s relationships with relevant stakeholders
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities relating to the investigative functions within OMARA
  • Foster commitment to shared goals and maintaining a contemporary knowledge in investigation concepts, methods, and tools.

Role Requirements/Qualifications

  • Qualifications and/or experience in managing administrative and/or criminal investigations
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in regulatory environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and positively influence others including overcoming barriers to change
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 Security clearance.

Eligibility and Specific Conditions of Employment

To be eligible to work with the Department of Home Affairs you must:

  • Obtain and maintain a current Employment Suitability Clearance
  • Satisfy a probation period
