About the opportunity

The Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH) plays a key role in enabling research excellence by facilitating higher quality impactful research and output by providing research compute, data science, software engineering, statistical and bioinformatics expertise to Sydney University researchers.

As a Research Compute Data Scientist, you will provide deep technical knowledge and support of translational data science and informatics projects to researchers across all faculties in the University. You will be advising the use of, develop, and implement data science algorithms, informatics methods, statistical approaches, software tools, data systems, and digital platforms, with a particular focus on using High Performance Computing and Cloud Computing technologies.

Reporting to the Research Computing Group Lead, your key responsibilities include:

  • provide collaborative data science and research computing support for projects undertaken by SIH

  • provide subject matter expertise in initiatives for Research Computing including HPC, Cloud, etc

  • support activities in the form of software development and data analysis

  • assist in the identification and dissemination of internal and external research opportunities

  • collaboratively build and develop an engineering and entrepreneurial culture in support of data science

  • manage the timing and delivery of research compute and data science training and workshops

About you

If you are passionate about helping researchers add to our body of knowledge and achieve real-world impacts, you will thrive in this role.

  • tertiary qualifications in computational area of study (data science, computer science, statistics, engineering, physics, biology, mathematics for example)

  • experience with modern data-centric programming languages such as Python, R, Julia, or Matlab

  • experience in application of complex data processing pipelines, data science, machine learning, high performance computing, or cloud technologies to a variety of complex data sets or physical simulations

  • expertise in research computing in Windows, MacOS, and primarily Linux environments

  • experience in research methodology with the ability to contribute to preparation of scientific papers

  • strong oral and written communication skills with an ability to communicate clearly and empathetically

  • (desirable) expert knowledge of developmental languages, e.g. CUDA, HIP, ROCm, OpenCL, C++, Java, Fortran and HPC tools akin to MPI and OpenMP.

Please note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. For a continuing position, you must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian Permanent Resident. Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
