  • About This Opportunity 

    We currently have an opportunity available for a Senior Research Assistant based within School of Social Science. The Senior Research Assistant will have strong project management and communication skills to join a two-year project to develop learning scenarios for first year students, to support their sense of belonging in the social sciences.

    Funded by a UQ Teaching Innovation Grant for 2023-2024, the project will integrate learning materials across (at least) four courses, to show how social scientists analyse and respond to wicked problems through diverse career pathways. The aim of this is to help first-year students understand the purpose of social science, to develop foundational skills in social science, and to build a sense of belonging to the field, the school and each other. Online learning scenarios will help bring online and on-campus students together while working beyond disciplinary silos will support a more holistic social science perspective and demonstrate the valuable contributions social science can make to addressing real-world problems.

    The UQ team, led by Dr. Lynda Shevellar, has twelve staff members, including first-year course coordinators across 4 disciplines in the Social Sciences, as well as staff from ITALI and HASS. The role of the SRA is to help coordinate the efforts across this large team to develop project materials in 2023 and to support their implementation and evaluation in 2024.

    Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Manage components of the project ensuring the project meets key milestones and is to budget.
  • Maintain and monitor expenditure against budget and regularly report on findings. 
  • Conduct basic literature reviews
  • Help to identify, liaise with and manage multiple stakeholders
  • Support the development of an ethics application
  • Develop online scenarios
  • Manage project evaluation activities
  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by the supervisor

    About You

  • Completion of a degree, with subsequent social research experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated project management skills: the ability to drive and manage a complex project;
  • The ability to work collaboratively, multidisciplinary, and professionally;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills, with a demonstrated ability to set goals, develop priorities, meet timelines, and to manage multiple and diverse tasks effectively;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop online learning materials and scenarios;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and administering evaluation processes.
  • What We Can Offer 

    This is a part-time (0.4FTE in the first year and 0.2FTE in the second year), fixed term position through to 31 December 2024 at HEW Level 6.

    The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $84,871 – $91,158. The total FTE package will be in the range $99,300 – $106,655 per annum.
