Position overview

ANU has an international reputation for research and education relevant to the health and well-being of the population of Australia, as well as that of the developing world. This is achieved through discovery research, applied research in health service settings, research-led teaching in health and medical sciences, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The ANU College of Health and Medicine comprises the School of Medicine and Psychology, the John Curtin School of Medical Research and the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health. These schools work together to deliver world-class research and education across the spectrum of medicine and health-related fields, working in partnership with the health sector at local, national and international levels.

While it is known that epigenetic modifications play a crucial role in regulating all aspects of genome function, a major gap in knowledge is how this second dimension of genomic information is functionally translated or interpreted to regulate specific patterns of gene expression. This project will reveal new fundamental principles of gene activation that include the identification of a new mechanism that relies on the interplay between chromatin-remodelling enzymes, histone posttranslational modifications and histone variants by using the latest approaches in protein purification, structural biology, and genome biology. Applicants will require strong skills in biochemical and/or structural techniques needed to study protein-protein or protein-DNA interactions, and be able to express and purify recombinant proteins. Experience in purifying proteins from living cells is desirable and having knowledge of the chromatin field would be advantageous

The John Curtin School of Medical Research constitutes a highly interactive and intellectually stimulating research environment within its three research divisions (Immunology, Neuroscience, and Genome and Cancer). It has a strong mentoring culture, giving junior scientists easy access to advice from more experienced colleagues. Links among researchers in the ANU College of Health and Medicine, and the College of Science and Environment gives access to a broader life science research context at the University.
