About us The Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) in the School of Earth Sciences at The University of Western Australia is a leading research centre in mineral system science applied to ore deposits. The CET provides a dynamic learning environment where the pressing problems of the mineral exploration industry can be addressed by teams of researchers using their collective expertise. This multidisciplinary team approach allows the CET to develop innovative research solutions consistent with its mission ‘to increase both the rate and quality of discoveries made in mineral exploration, without relying on substantial increases in exploration expenditure’. About the opportunity As the appointee, you would play a key role in investigating the volatile component signature of porphyry copper formation. This project would involve examination of mineral archives, such as apatite and hornblende, together with their mineral-fluid-melt inclusion cargos, to unravel the evolution of key volatile components including H2O, CO2, S and the halogens throughout the magmatic to hydrothermal stages of porphyry-style mineralisation. The aim is to establish chemical proxies for magmatic fertility and copper ore formation. The study will focus on samples from the giant Escondida (Chile) and Resolution (Arizona) deposits, as well as a number of other variably endowed PCD occurrences. You would be responsible for field sampling and for implementing the analytical program, and would also liaise with researchers involved in a companion experimental study to investigate hydrothermal fluid-rock interaction.The project is fully funded for 3 years by BHP Exploration. The Research Fellow would be based in Perth, but would travel to carry out relevant field and analytical work and to present results to the project sponsor. To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate: A PhD in geoscience A high level of technical competency in microanalysis, especially with electron microprobe, ion microprobe and/or laser ablation ICPMS platforms Advanced skills in mineral chemistry and stable and radiogenic isotope geochemistry, and a track record in the innovative application of such data to understand magma-fluid evolution and mineralisation processes. Excellent research and publication profile relative to opportunity Demonstrated ability to independently conduct, synthesise, and report high-level reviews in a timely manner Excellent verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated ability to prepare and interpret scientific and technical reports, to publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, and to communicate technical material to a broad audience Demonstrated ability to work productively in a collaborative research team and to build effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders Full details of the position responsibilities are outlined in the position description.
