PhD in Microbiome Research SAHMRI349 Scholarship Flinders Medical Centre Applications closeFriday 30, April 2021 Doctoral Opportunity in Respiratory Microbiome ResearchThe South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) invites applications for a unique opportunity to undertake PhD candidature within the Microbiome and Host Health programme. The candidate will join ENCOMPASS, an international collaborative network investigating interactions between the lung microbiome, chronic airway inflammation, and clinical outcomes in those with chronic lung diseases. An outstanding and highly motivated student will be supported to undertake analysis of large sample collections drawn from landmark studies of severe asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, and primary ciliary dyskinesia. The project will include the generation of metagenomic and airway inflammatory marker data, and its integrated analysis with risk exposures and clinical measures. Insight gained will directly inform our understanding of lung disease pathophysiology and clinical practice. Top-up ScholarshipA supplementary scholarship is available for applicants holding an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarship. The value of the SAHMRI PhD scholarship will be up to $30,000 over a maximum period of 3.5 full-time years, payable at the rate of $5,000 p.a. for the first year and $10,000 per annum for the remaining 2.5 years.EligibilityThe applicant should haveAn outstanding academic record. Hold a bachelor degree with honours or master’s degree in mucosal immunology, microbial ecology, or a related field.Hold an Australian Government Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship or equivalent. SupervisionThe candidate will be supervised by Professor Geraint Rogers, Director, Microbiome and Host Health programme, SAHMRI, and Dr Steven Taylor, the Respiratory Health Group lead, within the Microbiome Research.
