The Communications Branch plays a key role by providing support to six ministerial offices, including four Cabinet Ministers, and the department’s senior executive. The Media and Speechwriting Team works closely with other sections in the Branch that produce videos, social media content, maintain websites and deliver communications strategies. A core responsibility for the Media and Speechwriting Team is the production of high-quality media products including media releases and media enquiry responses, as well as speeches that are produced by our speechwriters. The team uses a media account management model for working with ministerial offices to help build subject expertise and develop strong professional working relationships.

Working in a diverse portfolio, there is a wide range of issues to be across so we are looking someone with a broad perspective and widespread interests. The prime focus of this role is to work closely with the office of a portfolio Cabinet Minister to deliver quality media products and services.

To excel in this position, you will need the ability to develop strong professional working relationships with ministerial media advisers and departmental program and policy areas. The ability to work in a dynamic and fast-changing environment is vital, as well as sound judgement, especially knowing when to escalate matters. In this role, you will work closely with the Media Manager to ensure a coordinated and consistent delivery of quality work.

The key duties of the position include:

This role requires excellent communication and judgement skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • overseeing the delivery of time-sensitive quality media products and services to ministerial offices, including media releases and media enquiry responses
  • developing subject expertise and liaising with departmental program and policy areas
  • staying abreast of key media developments in the portfolio
  • supervising staff when required and being a role model for collaboration and team work.
  • Eligibility

    To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens.

    Previous experience in an APS media or communications team would be an advantage.
     

    This position requires a Baseline security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

    The Media Team has a weekend media phone so once every five weeks you will be required to be available over the weekend and will be a paid applicable allowance/s.
