>Edinburgh SAThe key duties of the position include:The RoleThe Human Performance Scientist (HPS) will be primarily responsible for leading and coordinating multidiscipline research focused on enhancing the cognitive performance of the warfighter. You will be expected to identify gaps in current research, design and lead programs, work with university and Defence stakeholders, publish findings and translate the findings of that research for Defence.The HPS plays a vital role in leading research programs in current and emerging areas. In particular the HPS will be expected to, Conduct and account for research in one or more of the following research themes that could lead to enhanced cognitive performance for Defence operators: neuro-sensing and modulation technologies (e.g. EEG and TES), Human biotechnology (e.g. human gut microbiome), advanced training and selection technologies (e.g. apps and XR), team and individual assessment technologies (objective and subjective), and future enhancement systems (e.g. genetics).Support data collection activities in the field.Communicate the results of research using a variety of means to stakeholders with varying level of experience.Foster research collaborations based on trust and respect across DST Group, Universities and Defence stakeholders.Work closely with international partners to advance research in mutually beneficial areas.Manage financial resources.Supervise students and support the development of more junior staff.Contribute to the development of the profile and standing of Defence and the Cognition and Behavior Science and Technology Capability.Support the development of national science fora.Translate research findings into Defence outcomes.About our TeamThis position is within the Land Human Systems (LHS) Major Science & Technology Capability (MSTC) of Land Division (LD). The LHS MSTC undertakes human science research and development to enhance the capability of the warfighter. This is realised through the development of the warfighter’s physical and cognitive performance and resilience, and the optimisation of the human-system that enables them to achieve mission success across a wide range of challenging military tasks and environments.Military systems have people at their core. Their success is dependent on the selection, preparation and equipping of personnel to achieve difficult missions in often dangerous environments individually or more often as part of a mutually reliant team. Emerging research across a wide variety of human science disciplines promises new opportunities to enable the ADF to seize and maintain a capability advantage. The fast rate of technological advancement and the broad range of potentially relevant research fields demand a partnership approach. If Defence is to identify and pursue the most promising opportunities it needs access to leading research teams across Australia. DST’s human sciences capability has a well-established tradition of partnering to deliver against the research priorities of its military stakeholders. Our Ideal CandidateTo be successful in this role you will be self motivated and have demonstrated experience in applied research.You will be able to show significant experience in identifying gaps in current research that could lead to Defence outcomes and lead a multi-disciplinary team to deliver high quality outputs on time.You will have experience of managing work programs within a multi-discipline science & technology organisation.Demonstrated experience working autonomously and effectively within teams with the ability to adjust work plans as circumstances change.You will have sound judgement and decision making skills to concurrently manage multiple complex issues.Your high level of communication skills is demonstrated through effectively collaborating with Defence Groups, Industry Partners and Academia stakeholders.You will continue to develop your S&T and leadership skills and experience for self improvement and mentor junior staff to deliver work at a high standard to achieve best results.EligibilityApplicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.RecruitAbility applies to this vacancy.
