>Kingston TASThe Ice Core Gas Scientist will provide intellectual and technical leadership in establishing and developing of a world-class capability in ice core gas extraction and measurement. The Ice Core Gas Scientist will bring proven high-level technical, analytical and interpretive skills to build this new laboratory, research capacity and to guide the research into its interpretive phase.The key duties of the position include:The Ice Core Gas Scientist will undertake the following activities and responsibilities.Lead the establishment and development of a world class facility for ice core gas analysis suitable for the Australian Antarctic Divisions MYIC Project, byLeading the development and construction of a small volume, discrete, gas dry extraction facility.Leading the development and integration of the dry extraction facility with gas chromatography, spectroscopy and mass spectrometry instruments for measurement of CO2, CH4, N2O and their full suite of isotopes.Leading the development and analysis of other ice core trace gases, which inform on atmospheric chemistry (e.g. CO) and ice core dating (e.g. Ar isotopes, δ18O2).Providing direction and guidance to scientists working on continuous flow measurement of selected ice core gases. Manage and supervise other staff and researchers in the development and use of the facilities.Play a lead role in interpreting what the MYIC record of past atmospheric composition reveals about climate and carbon-cycle feedbacks and about changes in the partitioning of carbon between the ocean, land and atmosphere.Engage and collaborate with ice core gas scientists at CSIRO Aspendale on development, testing and calibration of the new facility and with CSIRO and other AAPP researchers in applying the facility to Antarctic and global climate research.Maintain a record of internationally recognised ice core gas research (for example, in fields of biogeochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, carbon cycle research or earth science) as demonstrated by influential publications and presentations.Represent the AAD in external forums.Play a lead role in the quantitative interpretation of ice core gas records by applying or guiding the application of process models and more complex numerical models of the earth system.Collaborate effectively to maintain an innovative state-of-the-art local gas analysis facility and enhance strategic research partnerships for ice core and multi-disciplinary palaeoclimate studies. Work with teams from across AAD in operations, logistics, assets and technical areas on the development of associated technical and field capabilities for the MYIC project. This may include the opportunity for fieldwork in Antarctica.Build and maintain productive working relations with stakeholders, both internal and external to the AAD, including developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with scientists and professions from research agencies and universities.Supporting and actively promoting a culture of safety, compliance and continuous improvement within the Science Branch.Knowledge and experience Established international-level research career in ice core gas research with a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (e.g. geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, earth science).High-level technical, analytical and interpretive skills in ice core gas science.Experience in the training of researchers and technicians in the development and use of gas extraction and measurement equipment. EligibilityMandatory qualificationsA Ph.D. in a relevant discipline from an Australian tertiary institution, or a comparable overseas institution, or demonstrated equivalent experience.Eligibility and other requirementsCitizenship – Employment with the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment is limited to Australian citizens except in specific and defined circumstances.
