>Belconnen ACT, Sydney NSW, Brisbane QLD, Adelaide SA, Perth WA, Docklands VICThe key duties of the position include:The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill multiple Mathematical Statistician and Data Scientist roles (APS 6) in two of our Divisions, the Methodology Division (MD) and the Data Strategy, Integration and Services Division.Working in the Methodology DivisionWe are seeking motivated people with skills in fields such as statistics, data science, mathematics, modelling and analysis, survey sampling and estimation, statistical disclosure control, statistical data integration, economics / econometrics or time series analysis. The roles are best suited to people who work well in a team environment, have strong problem-solving skills, and are able to work flexibly to agreed priorities and deadlines.A career in MD will provide opportunities to develop expertise in methods used in the conduct of official statistics, and opportunities to develop and adapt new methods to be used in the ABS in the future. Successful applicants will have future opportunities to be transferred or promoted within MD or move to other interesting roles across the ABS.The positions offer flexible working arrangements (in terms of hours and/or doing some work from home), working in virtual teams (across the country) and collaborating with external methodologists in academia or overseas in other National Statistical Offices.Tertiary qualifications in fields such as statistics, data science, mathematics, econometrics, economics, or related disciplines would be highly desirable. Qualifications at honours level or above would be a further advantage.As an APS6 in the Methodology Division you will:work under limited supervision, take the lead in methodological projects and provide methodological support to other parts of the ABS, plan and manage work outputs while supervising and reviewing the work of other staff members, use statistical computing languages (for example R, Python or SAS) to manipulate data for statistical design and/or analysis, present the results of methodological work to internal and external audiences in meetings, seminars and conferences, andplan, conduct and prepare reports on complex research projects and empirical studies.These MD roles are only available to be filled in the Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide ABS offices, based on the needs of the hiring area/s and to meet the requirements of being a merit based process. Working in the Data Strategy, Integration and Services DivisionThe Data Strategy, Integration and Services Division is looking to fill several data scientist roles. Responsibilities vary by role but may include: leading the processing, linking and quality assurance of data from a variety of sources, including other areas of the ABS and administrative data from other agencies, undertaking data handling activities while upholding the ABS’s commitment to privacy and security, designing and implementing data linking strategies for large and complex datasets, creating de-identified microdata products for use by analysts, assisting the division to tailor its analytical environments for other data analysts/scientists to undertake cutting edge statistical research, providing advice to other data analysts/scientists to clarify data requirements, solve problems and optimise their work approach in order to meet cost and time expectations, anddeveloping and maintaining instructional material for data analysts/scientists to effectively implement data linking strategies and use the ABS’ analytical environment.These DSISD roles are only available to be filled in the Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth ABS offices, based on the needs of the hiring area/s and to meet the requirements of being a merit based process.
