Leaving no-one behind: Informing Indigenous aged care policy with big data is a collaborative research project between the Population Health Platform of Wardliparingga Aboriginal Health Equity (AHE) and the Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA). It aims to generate high quality evidence on the needs and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in aged care. The research will be informed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and use the Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA). It will be conducted by implementing the principles of the South Australian Aboriginal Health Research Accord, adopting best-practice epidemiological methods and advanced analytics and have a focus on the translation of findings to policy and practice.Reporting to the Wardliparingga Population Health Platform Lead, this position will work independently and with the AHE theme and the ROSA research and analytical team in the development and conduct of the ‘Leaving no-one behind: Informing Indigenous aged care policy with big data’ study. The role will support the embedding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community leadership in the research and interact with a range of external stakeholders including SAHMRI staff, Aboriginal communities and health and social services and community organisations, research partners and collaborators, ROSA’s governance committees, ethics committees, and data owners/custodians. For the purpose of translation of findings to inform policy and practice, this will include interpretation, communication and distribution of results. There are no current direct reports for this role, but it may include the responsibility for students or interns. About the RoleKey responsibilities include:Conducting high quality research with a focus on health, health services, and aged care services for older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including planning, execution, statistical analyses and publication.Contribute to the activities of the collaborative research between AHE and ROSA, focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals in aged care settings.Working independently as well as collaboratively with AHE, ROSA team, research partners, consumer representatives, staff and stakeholders of the research project.Support and embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander governance in the research, including by working closely with the ROSA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee.Liaise, coordinate, and support the ROSA team on new and existing ethics amendments required for the research in a timely manner.Contribute to (including leading), the preparation of papers for publication in high impact peer-reviewed journals.Participate in the dissemination of research findings at appropriate conferences.Mentor and supervise interns/students in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander healthy ageing/aged care research.Contribute to the preparation of grants and applications for competitive funding in related areas.About YouThe successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:Degree qualification in a relevant field with extensive relevant experience.PhD in Epidemiology, Statistics, Data Science or a related discipline as well as demonstrated experience contributing to research projects relating to the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Islander organisations or communitiesExcellent proficiency working with SAS, R, or Stata (at least in one statistical software package)Experience working with large population-based datasets independently (e.g. Medicare Benefits Schedule, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, state health authority administrative datasets). Aged care would be beneficial.Willingness to develop skills working with observational data, multivariable modelling, confounding/interaction issues, and survival analysis.Understanding of the Australian and additional Indigenous specific ethical requirements and processes of human research.Knowledge of the aged care system or health care sector in Australia, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aged Care Organisations, Advocacy Community Groups and community groups (desirable).Demonstrated experience in providing support to research projects.DCSI Working with Vulnerable People Clearance.National Police Clearance.Travel interstate and intrastate may be required.
