>Melbourne VIC, Canberra ACT, Sydney NSW, Brisbane QLD, Darwin NT, Perth WA, Adelaide SA, Hobart TASThe Bureau undertakes research in fulfillment of its responsibilities as a national research agency, contributing to the advancement of meteorological and earth system science in Australia, to the development of weather and climate applications for the needs of the Australian community, and to the support of the Bureau’s operational services. The Bureau of Meteorology Research Program, in collaboration with the operational areas of the Bureau, carries out the main research activities in the Bureau, in the areas of Earth System Modelling (ESM) including weather, ocean and seasonal prediction, and of Weather and Climate Information. The research work is carried out on high performance computing (HPC) platforms at the Bureau and at a collaboration site, the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI), based at Australian National University.This role will be located within a small team in the ESM Research Program to produce and evaluate high-resolution climate projections. The team’s main focus will be on adapting and enhancing existing modelling software to meet the needs of the project and developing techniques for the objective evaluation of the datasets.In consultation with the ACCESS team, the position will contribute to the production of high-resolution climate projections and the evaluation of the generated datasets. The role will make significant contributions to technical documents, scientific documentation suitable for peer review, and guidance for users of the model output.Within the Bureau, the position will liaise with staff in the ESM Research Section involved in the implementation and deployment of the numerical prediction systems, and with staff in the Climate Information Services Program involved in providing data and other products and services to decision makers in government, industry and the community. The position will assist in liaising with funding agencies as well as with other national and international organisations that collaborate with the Bureau on numerical prediction. The position will be supervised by the Atmospheric Modelling Team Leader.To be successful you will:Have experience in meteorology, Have experience in developing numerical models of the atmosphere, Have knowledge of high performance computing technology applicable to meteorological systems, Have experience in designing and undertaking high-level investigations and assessments of numerical models of the atmosphere, Have well-developed liaison, communication and documentation skills.The key duties of the position include:The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:Provide technical and scientific support in undertaking production and analysis of high-resolution climate projections for the Australian region.Develop and enhance techniques and algorithms for the evaluation of projected climate variables.Participate in activities to derive tailored products in consultation with internal and external stakeholders. Provide significant contributions to relevant documentation including technical reports, journal publications and conference presentations.Liaise with internal and external stakeholders regarding scientific and technical matters.Complying with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct. RecruitAbility applies to this vacancy.
