About the Role

Based in Forrest Hall, UWA, Perth, WA and reporting to the Senior Research Scientist, the Post Postdoctoral Fellow, Research and Innovation will be a passionate and energetic individual and will help execute the longer lead-time, science-intensive, national, and international projects aimed at improving the protection of our oceans against climate change.

This permanent full time role involves scientific investigation, the coordination of operations and the management of projects orientated around conservation genomics.  

Sitting within the Minderoo Foundation Flourishing Oceans team, the Postdoctoral Fellow will have a focus on generating science outcomes for the advocacy and implementation of ecosystem and species-based conservation in the oceans through the expansion and enhanced protection of Marine Protected Areas though the application of ‘Omics tools.

The role has a global aim that requires an experienced individual with the ability to coordinate projects within universities, industry, and government.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Under the guidance of Senior Research Scientist, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to Minderoo Foundation that will, where possible, lead to novel and game-changing scientific outcomes and conservation solutions.
  • Working with Minderoo colleagues and national/international collaborators, design and undertake aquarium experiments, fieldwork, and/or modelling activities to investigate the ecological, molecular, and theoretical basis of tolerance to climate change extremes across a range of species and habitats, with a particular focus on coral reefs and in seagrass meadows.
  • Organization and execution of complex national/international projects.
  • Liaise and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders including international bodies, external research institutes and universities, government, industry, and conservation organisations.
  • Establish a monitoring framework to determine the impact outcome of research initiated.
  • Develop and manage project budgets.
  • Produce high quality scientific papers suitable for publication in top-tier journals and for stakeholder reports to enable conservation action.
  • Prepare appropriate conference papers and present those at conferences.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative concepts and ideas for   further research.
  • Link and synergise with other Flourishing Oceans programs.
  • Oversight of Masters and PhD students and the active fostering of their development.
  • Develop science-based communications and other advocacy tools and undertake media as needed.
  • Manage workflow scheduling for the team, and high standards of quality and timeliness.

Qualifications

About You 

  • You have a doctorate in a relevant discipline area (e.g., marine science, genomics) as well as a minimum of two years post doctorate experience
  • You can demonstrate a record of publications in quality, peer reviewed journals.
  • You have high level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally at national and international events.
  • You have a history of professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment.
  • You have demonstrated capability to conduct research in genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or modelling.
  • You have demonstrated skills in R, Linux, Python.
  • You’re experienced in marine biology and working in natural or controlled environments.
  • Of vital importance is that you have a “can-do” attitude and be proactive in suggesting improvements or developing creative solutions to challenges and processes, you can adapt be flexible, and thrive on uncertainty!
